  • They did very well, doesn't seem like it's their first performance at a big venue at all.

Ahyeon is really growing on me, it's very cute how she keeps teasing the other members mid-performance and how much she interacts/how nice she is with the fans

  • there's no market coz it's banned iirc
i dont remember any group touring china after the THAAD issue. i'm talking about mainland

It happens, but very rarely. It will likely be a long time before relations stabilize enough for China to become a viable market again for anything outside of album sales.

  • not groups though

    individuals...

one can have a very long and lucrative career in China after their idol career ends

The problem is that no one has any real incentive to do this unless they themselves are Chinese (which Ahyeon isn't.) You'd be better off learning English and trying to break into the US entertainment scene, which can potentially lead to international stardom. A Chinese star will always be mainly a Chinese star. A big market to be sure, but still just one market.

and yet they (most kpop idols) learn japanese and besides the occasional album here and there during their idol careers very few of them continue to promote there post their idol careers.

English is obvious since they all have to learn some form of English (even at school) so to me besides Korean and English maybe instead of learning Japanese they can learn Chinese (either in addition to or substitution for Japanese)

Japan is still a demonstrably viable market for Kpop, although some acts have more success there than others. It's a particularly useful place to promote if you're Japanese. Will a Korean Kpop idol find continued success there if they switch careers, or even if they just fall out of the limelight in Korea? Probably not, but it wouldn't be any easier in China. Just ask a group like T-ara, who used to be big in China, even long after they fell out of favor in Korea. No one is inviting them to continue making appearances there.

I agree that if you are Japanese then it's obvious since one would already know how to speak Japanese

I also understand that it's a highly desirable market whilst one is still an idol but post idol career I know of no idol (non-Japanese idol) that promotes in Japan regularly as an individual

can the members of T-ara speaking Chinese (semi fluently?)

isn't that the point that if you have the ability to speak a language sorta fluently that you have more opportunities in that country?

Jessica has a resurgence of success in China and she would not be what I call fluent but that's not the best example since there are no examples of exactly what I'm referring to

in fact there are no examples (that I know) that a Korean idol with semi fluent japanese managed to have a (semi) successful career in Japan post their idol career and (currently) no Korean idol with (semi) fluent Chinese skills (at all) so I guess my point is if it hasn't worked for idols learning Japanese maybe they should consider learning Chinese???

(I hope I'm explaining myself well lol)

  • Kara's Jiyoung promoted in Japan as an actress after leaving the group initially, but I don't know how successful she was. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other examples of that happening.

I can't really comment on their proficiency with Chinese, since I don't speak the language, but T-ara were seemingly able to communicate with fans during their Chinese concerts. Some members more than others. But they were succesful enough there that the entire group at least took Chinese classes.

Jessica's success in China is a little odd and probably not easy to replicate. I think at the very least, you'd have to be a former member of a top tier Kpop group to even have that opportunity. I still think she in particular could've done just as well with a US debut, but she never really seemed to try.

I am Chinese so I am fluent in the language - communicating somewhat with fans at a fansign is not what I would consider even semi- fluent but I haven't seen them speak so I wouldn't know T-ara's abilities

that I would agree with - I did think she tried to enter the US but I'm not too familiar with her post SNSD and pre-China

thanks for that - I skimmed through it

but they had a translator and besides the introductions and a couple of pre-rehearsed phrases they don't speak Chinese

(no offence to T-ara) they tried their best which is all anyone can expect

give me an example, coz it either macau or hong kong after THAAD issue.
even exo cancelled their all their mainland show except 1 during exo planet 3.

hell i dont even think i see any k-pop that is not chinese promote in mainland china.
the last i remember is G-dragon became became a model for a drink in 2020 iirc and it kinda became a big deal how he can land those deal despite the ban.
