Do you agree with the saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all"

  • Or as Thumper from Bambi says it:

I feel like in some contexts, I agree with it.

I think when someone says something rude about another person (e.g. insulting how someone's face looks like, even though they are born with that face), then that someone often gets that sentence as a response.

But in contexts like talking about movies, books, music etc... then it kinda doesn't work.

Even though some artists can't handle criticism, but that is their problem. (especially thinking about authors who attack people who write bad reviews on their books)

And as someone, who draws and also writes short stories, poems and fanfics, there are times when I want to hear some constructive criticism and not just "Well... it's nice" (even though there are times when I'm a bit scared of hearing someone saying bad things about my art)

Like constructive criticism can make someone improve as an artist.

Even though I feel like when I don't like someone's art, there are times when I try to be nice about it. Like saying "This isn't my cup of tea" (especially if I feel in a "some people might like this, but I don't" kind of way)

And well... there are times when I have watched a movie or listened to a song, and been thinking "Well... I liked some parts of it"

And I might feel a bit defensive, if someone doesn't like a kpop song that I like. (a habit that I need to stop with.)

Okay, I admit that the thread was kinda inspired by a video essay about certain types of movies and that person mentions how he used to dislike that Thumper quote.

And well... this thread might be a bit too similar to some other threads that I have made...

Changed the title of the thread from “Do you agree with the saying "If you have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all"” to “Do you agree with the saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all"”.
  • Here sometimes if you say stupid shit some people tend to fire back at you "Du hättest dir deinen dummen Kommentar auch einfach sparen können" (= You just could've saved your stupid comment to yourself) or "Manche Dinge bleiben lieber unausgesprochen" (= some things better stay unspoken)

    that's what I always say

at least with respect to new music

  • It's a big difference say some "not so nice" to a person or just express a negative opinion about something. If a think a song is bad, I say it. But I'm also try to balance it a bit, I'm bit harder against popular groups or a song that gets many likes just to put in a different opinion. No point to kick on somebody that already is lying down ... . It's easier to expresse negative opinion on groups like NewJeans, Blackpink or similar groups than some brand new debuting group from a smaller company.

  • On some occasions, yes, because you're just wasting your breath and time responding.

"You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't bout how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward." ~ Rocky Balboa

  • I mean if you're defending yourself whether you're about to hurt someones feelings or not by all means stand up for yourself. but usually, i kind of agree with the saying. If you're just trying to insult someone unprovoked maybe keep your shit to yourself.
