A man in his 20s is standing trial for impersonating BTS V and Suga and stealing confidential information. ‘A man in his 20s who impersonated members of the group BTS was sentenced to prison in the first trial.

On the 19th, Criminal Division 27 of the Seoul Central District Court (Judge Ham Hyun-ji) sentenced Mr. A (29), who was indicted on charges of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, to one year in prison.

Mr. A is accused of approaching producer B as if he were BTS' Suga from August to September 2022 and receiving unreleased guide music.

In November of the same year, it was discovered that he contacted Suga by impersonating Mr. B and collected information related to albums and military service related to the time of enlistment.

Mr. A is also accused of impersonating V and receiving more than 10 unreleased guide sound files from other producers.

The court said, “There was a possibility that the victims and the affected company would suffer significant financial and social damage due to Mr. A’s actions,” and “It appears that the victims who passed on undisclosed information suffered significant psychological damage.”

In particular, Mr. A has a history of being sentenced to prison in the past for crimes using the same and some similar methods, and he committed the same crime while being investigated and tried for the same crime, so the court judged that the crime was "not good."

Mr. A is said to have participated in the song production process of a famous idol group in the past. He filed an appeal against the first trial ruling.” In addition, suspicions of unauthorized theft of information related to the release of albums of the agency that were not released to the public, unreleased sound source information, personal information and personal information of the affiliated singers, and schedules were also identified.

The court predicted a high possibility of property and social damage to the victims and the affected company due to Mr. A's actions, and said, "It appears that the victims have suffered significant psychological damage." In particular, Mr. A was reprimanded for having been sentenced to prison in the past for crimes similar to the method of the crime in question, saying, "The damage has not been recovered at all and he has not been forgiven by the victims."

However, the reasons for sentencing were explained based on the fact that Mr. A is currently showing a remorseful attitude and that Mr. A's family is committed to leading the way. Mr. A is dissatisfied with the first trial ruling and has filed an appeal.

  • This person is a professional at social engineering. He knows how to convince people. Read the article again he also impersonated the other person and contacted yoongi himself and got him to send him stuff too so it's not just bighit that got tricked

Yes, but the problem is that the man had already been leaking the stolen files on Twitter and Instagram for a while. They should have realized there was already a thief out there long before this got to 10+ songs.

I'm sure they did. But you have to remember finding a spy amongst your ranks is very very difficult even worse when the person isn't even amongst you and you find out its an outsider. This type of revelation upheaval shakes up any confidence you once had. This happened to HYBE and the members. Imagine being Suga and telling this dude stuff thinking hes one of yours. He's done this with hybe staff its third party affiliates and the BTS members directly. Hes successfully fooled everyone. Besides jail time he needs to be taken in and studied you need to learn how he did it to prevent it from happening again. Hybe already had alot of security etc yet this dude walked over it like it was nothing.

And the man is so confident that he tries to do the same thing even though he knows there is an investigation. Yup, HYBE should really upgrade security. Because the theft of Jimin's personal tax information and mail, the leak of Tae and Jennie's private pictures, and the leak of unreleased songs using Suga and Tae's name indicate a major security vulnerability.

See the issue here is people don't understand wtf social engineering means. Social engineering skills can bypass almost any security protocols. This stuff works on places with way higher security standards than a kpop company. The only way to defeat it is making your people robots. Social engineering takes advantage of the flaws in humans. This guy manipulated the members, and the staff of HYBE. So technically this is their own fault. Like how can you say vulnerability when Suga himself gave the guy the stuff. You see how dangerous social engineering is? It uses the people of the organization against itself. Could they increase security? Sure but then it would slow down things significantly and weigh on the mental health of the people involved as they would have to essentially operate in a zero trust environment even amongst each other and a place they thought was safe.

Example think if your mom called you about what you wanted for dinner but because of everything you started the conversation with hey tell me this secret code . before you guys could even talk. And these types of verification checks being done with nearly evey form of communication about anything.

  • The fake hoe Lil21 finally going to jail...he leked everything from My Universe to Stay Alive to Yet to Come to Run BtS to Take Two and also that there would be an anthology release from BTS.

  • I feel like you gotta be a little dense to not realize that something's wrong. Like, did these people never communicate in person and then be like "hey, remember that demo I sent you last night" and the other is like "I have no idea what you're talking about". I just don't see how this could happen. How did it happen so many times before this guy was caught?

  • Not just the company the guy used everyone. Did you read the article he even convinced yoongi to give him information. The company isn't dumb nor is BTS. Anyone can be susceptible to social engineering it's difficult to avoid

I agree with you. So many people think they are NOT vulnerable to these kind of criminal activities but if it happens - then it is another story. Not to say that HYBE and BigHit aren’t at fault - obviously they need to up their security too. Many people don’t know how sophisticated some criminals have become. Or had an encounter with these experts of manipulation. I legit had a friend that fell for a scammer and I never thought she would fall for it but he found her vulnerability and got in.

I hope this guy gets a proper punishment too!

Fairly easy you forget how busy and hectic this industry is. The people doing these manipulative things know not to ask obvious stuff that will come up later it's usually something small in passing something you'd forget about or something you'd already assume was done. Like how he manipulated yoongi to send him stuff. These idols are soo busy im sure a brief conversation about something was easily forgotten about. Or if it's something important since this guy has been manipulating the idols and the staff its easier for him to fish out stuff and then basically be the middle man between them without anyone noticing. Let's say I'm asking yoongi for a guide and im faking that im his director. He's going to assume im working on it. Easy I know the real director likely already has the guide so asking solves one issue. Now when yoongi later asks him about it it's not suspicious because i took advantage of a natural human flaw, how we put data in perspective. He's going to say how's that bridge coming along? He's going to respond with just finished it now wanna see? Notice that the two easily filled in the blanks and didn't ask anything else irrelevant to the question. This is a normal thing people do he didn't say hay you asked for a bridge last night at 8. People don't do that .

It was the latter so now none are the wiser that i got the stuff already. You can do this type of thing with plenty stuff

While you're saying makes sense, when it's someone's job and livelihood to produce/make/distribute music one would imagine they'd be more careful about who and where their product is going to. All I'm saying is it's incredibly stupid to put your wallet in someone else's hand and trust them to do right with it. Most of this could've easily been avoided if people actually communicated with each other directly and followed through.

So I guess Hybe got what they deserve. Sorry for those BTS guys though for believing the staff can do their jobs.

The stuff that got leaked isn't even worth much. Bigger companies have had worst leaked.

In the end you can have the strongest security in the world, but the weakest link is always the human factor.

Same with all those fake sms bank scams, the bank can have the best security but if the hacker can trick the account holder into giving them their personal details and sending the funds all the security in the world wouldn't do much.

I think the guy must have had help from someone on the inside, or he must have hacked the accounts of all the producers inside or something. Because he knows which producers are working with which songs and members, and thus he knows which members/producers he can use.
