Realistically in terms of fandom size where will you rank EXO?

  • Twice, Aespa and NCT 127 level I think

Far behind Seventeen or Stray Kids

Hmmm I feel like since we don’t have touring in China a level playing field is lost. And in Korea I don’t believe SKZ or 17 can reach EXO. Even in 2019 EXO did 6 back to back shows in KSPO. I don’t think ppl even realize how insane that is 💀(wait I should make a thread on that 🫡)

The gap is coming from the rest of the world and I concur. But for me to accept that the rest of the world has that much value over Korea and China is still up in the air. I will accept they’re bigger but not significantly bigger.

If talking about value, for me chinese fans are the ones who are the least important among the biggest 4 markets for kpop. I believe Japan goes without saying, they are far and away the most important market for kpop acts and this is not up to discussion

Korea is extremely important for long standing career, solo career, acting, modeling and for being the market that drives the most popular groups and trends specially for SEA. But they are a very tiny and dying market and their purchase power is somewhat limited. Will put them in second place nonetheless

As for American fans their value comes from their concert power. Twice can't even fill a single date in KSPO Dome but pulled over 240k in concert attendance in USA. But besides that, American audiences bring in immense brand power for idols as well, as Europe and LATAM tend to follow whatever sells in USA idols can experience minor popularity in those markets and collateral effects

Bulk buying albums for bragging rights aside there is no much use in Chinese fans really... they offer no value in concerts nor in brand power. Being highly popular in China, unless you're Chinese who can endorse Chinese deals, is next to useless. SEA fans can at least engage idols brand on social media which allow them to sign CFs and get money from non-musical activities

  • japan for me is interesting. See EXO can pull 320k people in Japan even if they can’t sell 320k albums there lol . Maybe they can’t do that in 2023 but they did indeed do that. That’s not insignificant for me at all. Nor are they like invisible there there. Not everyone who sells more than EXO in Japan have toured bigger than EXO there.

For China that’s exactly what I’m saying as well. Since we don’t have concerts in China it’s hard to level the playing field. Japan isn’t EXO’s top market but it’s not like as if they were barely filling concert halls there either.

US is all about casuals who enjoy kpop very little to do with fandoms imo. Profitable tho. Hella profitable.

  • Depends, way way less than say NCT, SK or 17. Probably a small bit below Twice, Aespa, TxT etc level.

It's really hard to tell without touring but in the west they'll have one of the smallest out of the big acts as they basically missed the entire western Kpop expansion due to inactivity.

They are upper-mid in Japan nad big in China. SEA? No idea and have a big domestic fandom still.

The issue is western fans have 0 interest in them and newer fans getting into Kpop don't care even slightly about Exo so they exist with their legacy fan almost exclusively.
