XG "Grl Gvng" : BOP vs FLOP

This group exists in a weird zone where they're not "korean enough" for the kpop market but they're also "too kpop esque" for the western market. It's a shame because the girls seem about as talented as your average kpop group but lack a loyal target audience.

If Mascara is more "K-pop" and is one for the ladies, guys will like this more IMO. Those into 90's-00's Japanimation (Akira, Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell) will eat this up, the video is seriously nuts! You can find another girl crush group do something similar to Mascara, but their subsequent stuff has been getting more unique and playing more to their strengths. This one just shows you another side of their versatility. LR is still my favorite though and fingers crossed that the title track goes back to old school hip-hop/R&B, which a lot of their non-Kpop fans I'm sure are looking forward to as well.

Edit: Bop, if I wasn't clear. Can't say they've missed yet.

The lyrics are kinda cringe but the music video is absolutely stunning. It helps to block out the lyrics.

I would agree if we were in 2nd gen but just with their current exposure on K-pop platforms, they’ve secured themselves a pretty nice size fanbase. A loyal one at that since they get bullied so much by Koreans.

Their fans actually show up to see them. So even though they’re not K-pop, most people would consider XG K-pop so they’re pulling from the same fan pool.

I’ve also seen their fans complain that their albums were sold out and that they we’re waiting for restock. XG has a very passionate fan base from what I’ve observed.

I heard Cho Gi-Seok directed the MV which explains how incredible all of this looks. It genuinely feels futuristic, it’s bananas

Which is why I’m surprised by the song itself: why are they bringing back this kind of beat? It’s not 2018 anymore, Travis Scott type beats are really played out. The melody is okay but it hasn’t hooked me yet.

Hopefully the TT is less conservative

In May while I was there I saw Tower Records plugging them hard. Like a whole display for them... But did they actually have albums in stock? NOOOOOOOOOOO
