GIDLE's most controversial stage is also one of their most viewed

  • Their live(?) Queendom stage for Fire, known controversially as "ethnic hip" performance by ifans, got more views than the Lion stage. That's despite Queendom's Lion is considered one of the best live stages done by a girl group. GIDLE once again proves controversy can work if done right.

  • The only thing i know of the "ethnic hip" controversy is that I Fans were pissed that Soyeon used that phrase. Personally i have no fucking clue why this caused so much outrage. She's literally just crediting black culture for creating the hip hop music genre that almost all modern pop is based off of. Unless there was more to it than the phrase itself.

    that's not it though

the thing that bothered me and many of my friends with that video was the way she talked about africans chants and drums. it was really caricatural and wrong, like she thought us africans still lived among tribes in dirt huts or something wich is totally WRONG. also africa is a huge ass continent, with a huge diversity of ethnicities, and soyeon never credited any specific african culture for her performance (which btw was by no way inspired by africans cultures looking at it lol she even used samples from american indigenious tribes instead of africans tribes ;( ). us africans are used to have our cultures caricatured and simplified, which soyeon did. it wasn't racist by any way tho, just ignorant from her.

also ifans deeply misunderstood how wrong the video was and made a fuss about "ethnic hip" instead

i don't give a shit about ethnic hip i just wanted to see my culture or my neighboor countrie's cultures well represented

    sorry for my bad english

Blame the Lion King, that's probably all she knows about Africa. Still, even the Africans love the Lion King, don't they? So I don't see why it was such a huge deal.

  • Thanks for explaining, i appreciate it. I'm not surprised actually, when i was in college, people genuinely asked me if Hawaiians lived in huts and grass shacks lol.

  • THIS!!! As an African immigrant from the US, I was mad at the way she perceived people that are from Africa. It was really insensitive of her and the other communities she might have hurt

  • I fail to understand at which moment (G)I-DLE's cover of Fire was supposed to be an accurate depiction of any African culture. Did you mistake a k-pop song for a National Geographic documentary?

Soyeon just evoked the mood she wanted to go with; basically a tribal vibe. Of course "tribal" is a very broad term. Yet, do you people give flak to all those mofos with "tribal" tattoos inked forever on their skin?

People use the term Asian all the time to refer to stereotypical East Asian (Chinese etc) or sometimes SEA cultures. Yet Asia is many times more diverse than Africa. I wonder why Africans get more offended over that compared to the rest of Asians who don't look nothing like your oppas. Hmmm

Really good point. As a movie buff, I often talk about my taste for Asian cinema. It doesn't mean I have no clue what's the difference between Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, Vietnam, etc.
