Is this live? I'm confused

  • It doesn't seem live to me except it has a lot of those breath "pop" sounds into the mic so I'm unsure. Some of the comments mention it being live. What do you think?

  • There are some moments where there's very clear realistic mic audio overlapping with the backtrack meaning the mics are actually on. That doesn't mean all mics are on either. There are a ton of prerecorded performances nowadays with 80 or even 90% lipsync with very clear 'mic on' moments included in the performances to create the illusion it's live.

Clapping, breath sounds etc. can be part of the prerecording. The loud breath sounds here really seem like they are part of the prerecording because when voices break through over the backtrack its nowhere near as loud as the breath noises.

My verdict is this is a good 60% lipsync at least with prerecorded live vocal backtrack. That's just a guess, sometimes it's hard to tell when they have a really loud backtrack. They could also be singing far more but the backtrack is extremely loud to basically mask whether they are singing or not.

1:08 is what real live vocal over the backtrack sounds like. The entire rap segment is what prerecorded live vocal and probably very high % lipsync sounds like. The voice does not have a single flaw even though there is a decent amount of movement. The rap part has clear mic pops and breaths as part of the prerecorded track in my opinion.

Nowadays all performances like this get flooded with "oh my god the mics are ON they slayed" comments.

Maybe they are godlike singers and I'm horribly wrong, don't want to drag a group I'm not even familiar with. But I would not personally praise this stage for live vocals, the mics seem to be very low and backtrack very loud to enable not singing as much as you want.

  • I don't think so. It's either lipsynch or the backtrack is really dominant.

They're dancing too energetically for their voices to remain that stable throughout. It's incredibly difficult to control your voice and keep it even when you're dancing a choreography like that. (if not anatomically impossible)

  • prerecorded and mics on so you get a few of that breathy/hiss sound for that "live experience"

Many today just dont know what real live sounds like, and in turn it keeps increasing the expectations, people think its possible to sing pitch perfect while doing acrobatic on stages

  • Oh, thanks for the thorough analysis. I agree with you and I don't consider it a drag to say that this is prerecorded. While i prefer live stages (warts and all), i understand the demands of the business and this choreo is quite active. Since there are only five members, they can't have the active singer/ rapper really stand off to the side while the others dance either. It doesn't bother me. I've heard them sing more live and I've heard them mixed with some members louder than others. I was just curious cuz some said this was live. This is one of my fave groups btw. I love this performance anyway. I hope you enjoyed the song!

Are the mics on or was the popping actually prerecorded? They do that now too sometimes.

We've totally lost sight of real vocals. I agree. I wish there was a music show that required live vocals. I loved this performance (This song is my new fave and I adore MX) but I would like to see everyone singing live sometimes and then all out choreo performances could be lip sync sometimes too.

I did actually. I enjoyed Monsta X a lot on Starship Game Caterers, made me a lot more interested in them. Even checked out Joohoney on LMJ just because of that. I can definitely see the appeal in this group they are variety kings.

I stan many groups that almost never do stages without prerecorded vocals, it's not really a deal breaker. K-Pop is kind of an arms race where you need to use all the tools to put on the best possible performance so if the others are doing it you're forced to as well. Many groups also have difficult vocals in their songs, intense choreos or a combination of both that makes it simply impossible to do 'real' live vocals for stages. I still appreciate that they at least sing some parts live.

I don't generally watch variety and haven't heard of Starship Game Caterers or LMJ. I'll have to look them up.

I'm glad you enjoyed it <3

And yes, I agree with your arms race analogy unfortunately. I got to see MX live in concert and enjoyed it immensely even though it wasn't perfectly polished. They were amazing!

Lee Mujin Service is a show where idols and soloists go to sing (and talk a bit)

I just realized I didn't even abbreviate it correctly..

  • Oh wait, could you listen to this one too? I think you can hear the times when they are singing over the track better here. What do you think?

  • Hey, as a Monbebe I wondered the same thing.

I think with how often they are promoting on music shows, it could be that yes they are really singing but like you said it could be a backing track as well. Maybe just because how booked they are, they don't want to put any strain on their voices?
