That’s because stans of groups debuting in 2018 wanted to brag about their faves’ achievements and it’s impossible to do that back when early 3rd gen groups were still a wall, so they invented a whole new gen that’s entirely arbitrary and has no logic to make their faves look good. It was dumb then and looks even dumber now

4th gen started 2019 everything else really doesnt count
-
because 4th gen stans wanting something to brag in
-
because bts was too big
in the beginning of the 3rd gen other groups still had a chance at being at the top, there was a constant switch at who dominated a year/award/cb/..., but the second bts rose to #1, no one could compete. so, 4th gen stans needed an extra adjective, to still be able to compete with new upcoming groups.

Because there aren't that many iconic 3rd gen groups outside mainly the big 4 to sustain their gen. For ggs it's been mainly Twice, BP, RV, Mamamoo. For bgs Exo, BTS and NCT. Other groups were almost non existent, GFriend had a great couple years but they dropped off hard. Without other groups and only relying on big 4 means as soon as they start to age/drop off they take the gen with them so newer gen groups are debuted.
Compare to 2nd gen there's a visible difference. If you ignore the big 3 ggs like SNSD, 2NE1 or WG other ggs like Kara, Sistar, Girls Day, Secret etc could still top charts. Shinee, 2pm, beast, Suju, BAP, Infinite etc could also get hits and usual bg things like touring and album sales. 2nd was still active into the mid to late 2010s as a result even when the big 3 groups were starting to fade and replaced.

Stray Kids are 3rd gen and so are Gidle. They have the 3rd gen feel.

Aren’t they 1st gen

3rd gen started in Jan 2011 and lasted till Dec 2017. That's a full seven years, the standard length of a Kpop contract it makes sense.

That's because people keep shoving groups that don't belong into the 4th gen.
Third gen started in 2012 with EXO and ended in 2019. 2020 (the pandemic era groups) onward are the true 4th gen idols. But StrayKidz and G-dle did a good job as branding themselves as 4th gen and now it's too late to correct it. NCT almost succeeded as well, but Knetz eventually called them out on their B.S. I just know SM me big mad looking at StrayKidz getting away with it though while NCT was dragged for it.

Aren’t they 1st gen
No 2nd. Like I said Kpop had started to branch out more compared to previously with tye 1st gen where Korea was the only place groups promoted. TVXQ were one of the first groups to expand out and that continued to a larger scale when the likes of SNSD, Suju, 2ne1 etc started getting popular world wide.

Not even just bts either. Nobody could touch them but 4th gen couldn’t even get to rv level before…

4th Gen coincides with BTS meteoric rise in the west and globally.
In past years, there’s usually a Gen change when the predecessors are surpassed. But in 3rd Gen, it’s very hard to surpass a group like BTS.
So fans of newer debuting groups decided to establish a new Gen in order to praise records and brag among themselves
