I'm hella conflicted about Rings of Power series

  • abd.jpg

For example I love actress which portrayed Naevia in Spartacus, and now portrays Queen Miriel in Rings of Power

and don't get me wrong I have nothing against diversity in tv series

but it really should be done well...

    and sadly it isn't.

For me if they want to show us properly diverse city they've should done it right

but those are main characters from Numenor

    photo.jpg

now you can easily see that Queen stands out to the point you even ask - wait a second where she came from? Is she a foreigner? or are those other people foreigners, like traders or something? (example towards our current real life here in Europe)

now here is a description and look of Miriel in books

"fairer than silver or ivory or pearls".

    mirielb.jpg

so that was a bad example, but hey here is a good one

we have Arondir, an silvan elf

    Arondir_-_The_Rings_of_Power.jpg

but look here that boy on the right, they look nearly identical I even assumed that he might be his kid or something, and they have storyline in same place, same part of the world, it flippin works well

what's your opinion are you watchin it?

  • If you can't enjoy it because of the color of somebody's skin, just save yourself the trouble and don't watch it

    it's just

why are some characters popping in random places/situations like that

there was another example big ship full of sailors, and suddenly one of them is Asian :pepefacepalm:

couldn't they make just big ship of Korean handsome sailors? for example...

  • If you can't enjoy it because of the color of somebody's skin, just save yourself the trouble and don't watch it

It is good, story is entertaining and you are watching it a bit like those older 'adventure' type of family movies

you are watching this or that and asking questions who is this, where he/she came from, are they good/bad

    etc.

  • it's just

why are some characters popping in random places/situations like that

There's magic and elves in that show, I can honestly say that I pay no mind to one or two sailors of different race, and I say that as a Tolkien fan who read everything he wrote. It doesn't really do anything negative for me, I just watch it to have fun.

  • Seems "diversity" is its only selling point.

I am all for diversity, but also for integrity/originality. That is entirely lacking when these sort of piggy-backing on original works are being done.

If the "Dead White Men" did not write any characters of diversity, who is stopping the contemporary folks from writing their own original content?

Instead they have to borrow the premise and themes from "Dead White Men"? - Why?

Well that actually proves that DWM were better story tellers than the current Woke lot. Thereby justifying JRR's own quote.

“Evil cannot create anything new, they can only corrupt and ruin good forces have invented or made”

I wish there were more "Black Panther" kind of stories, than PoC being stuck on DWM stories- PoC not playing White men parts of White men story extensions, but PoC playing PoC stories.

I am not conflicted - I just give a wide berth and avoid any story whose selling point is just "diversity"

  • example towards our current real life here in Europe

Why you talking about Europe right now.....

Middle-earth is the main continent of Earth (Arda) in an imaginary period of the Earth's past, ending with Tolkien's Third Age, about 6,000 years ago. Tolkien's tales of Middle-earth mostly focus on the north-west of the continent. This part of Middle-earth is suggestive of Europe, the north-west of the Old World..........

The Old World consists of Africa, Europe and Asia, most of which encompasses the Eastern Hemisphere

Does that answer your question on why there are people of other colors there? You talk abt a series with "diversity" and u get upset it has 3 POC characters? really?

  • It's an adaption of a fantasy setting with a bunch of original characters. Made in 2022. It's okay if everything's not like the books -- that's what the books are for.

Plus Amazon would get torn to shreds if it was just a bunch of white dudes. Just accept the brown hobbits yo.

  • Lots of these fantasy movies stories characters are based on norse, greek methodology etc which can be said of white people, hence we have white people all over it in these fantasy stories. I don't think PoC writers and directors focus much on fantasy, they usually make realistic drama films. They can do their own fantasy movies based on their traditional folklores, novels or myths just like china who produces wuxia fantasy dramas constantly lol.

  • I actually like the show so far. But I get your point. They really just gave the main characters diversity while the people around them are all white.

If you want to sell me a world where diversity is common, give me actual diversity in the background characters too, the citizens of the country.

That’s why Bridgerton feels so much more natural with their diversity. 1. They made it clear that these people were indeed foreigners or their ancestors were and 2. That they live in an era with no racism, so diversity has become natural aspect of this British era.

But I don’t mind it that much, tbh I’m used to Hollywoods minimal effort and many people are defending this so duh.

  • yes because it's easier to understand things how they are in our world

if you go to Japanese village you will meet old Japanese people

if you go to village in Kenya or Ethiopia you will meet their own

if you go to Polish village you will meet Polish people

but script writers are living in current US and they just do things just like they are currently in US

I understand the whole "but this is fantasy" thing that people take out from pocket all the time

because if you live in such environment it's normal thing for you

they are just not smart bout that, couldn't they for example make group of Korean elves living in the woods or some sort of hidden castle

group of Nigerian dwarfs living in the caves of big mountain or

group of Russian orcs living in underground tunnels?

    could they?

they could, but they just randomly change this or that in the original story to "fit" requirements of this or that award nominations...

They should.. but then I think lot of this 'token woken' business is not by PoC creators themselves, but rather Woke White Virtue Signalers, who think piggybacking on DWM stories with PoC characters, somehow serves the cause of diversity - shallow tokenism.

Yes Wuxia is a good example.

But I also understand it is a challenge with a multi cultural audience like the West, unlike Wuxia or DWM stories which can be produced for pretty much homogenized audience.

So write new fantasies which are truly representative of diversity, than mess with existing ones.
