Do you think the longevity in the charts is important for huge hits ?

  • It's important if you only have a comeback once a year or once every few years. If you're constantly coming back multiple times each year, it wouldn't be too big of a deal if the longevity isn't there.

It's similar to the business concept of:

You can sell one thing priced at $1 million dollars or you can sell a million things for $1 each.

  • Good question, depends on your peak i think.

If your peak is so high that it dwarfs everyone else, longevity probably doesnt matter, that peak shows just how relevant you are to the general public even if they dont fully back your song.

I'm thinking of Bigbang here, Still Life didnt have as good longevity as Tomboy and Love Dive obviously but jesus christ, to get 900k UL in this day and age shows clearly how relevant they are and could be if they reunited.

Then you have some songs or acts that have amazing longevity in the Top 100, but cant get #1 or cant remain in the top 10 of Melon for 20+ weeks. These feel like fandom driven songs or acts. With UL counts so low in general for charts like Melon, fandoms can have disproportionately larger impacts in terms of keeping their faves songs rattling around in the top 100 for months even years even if they have barely made an impact on the top of the charts.

I think the best metric for determining huge hits is a combination of peaks x longevity, the top 10 Melon Weekly Chart. I feel like this is the toughest chart in Korea, way tougher than Gaon which can easily be distorted by fandom downloads. I would say Melon Monthly Chart but as i understand it, that chart is heavily influenced by the date of release of the song (songs released on the 1st have a way way better chance of getting #1 on Melon Monthly than songs released on the 30th).

Top 10 Melon Weekly Chart smooths out all the quirks and extenuating circumstances and gives us the fairest way to judge a song's total popularity. If you can stay in the top 10 of Melon Weekly for 15, 20, or more weeks, i think this proves beyond a doubt that your song is popular with the GP and has staying power.
