JYP hasn’t had an artist do US music festival. Why?

  • YG- Blackpink - their own stage at Coachella

SM - Aespa - own of performers of 88rising set at Coachella

Hybe - Jhope first Korean headliner at US music festival - Lolapalooza, Txt also joining

But nothing for JYP yet. Why? And who can be their first act at a US music festival?

  • first of all you overestimate how much they care...

Stray Kids and Itzy got signed to a US label (SKZ had no proper US distribution before that at all) four and three years after their debuts, while you have BigHit that signed TXT to one, afaik, right after they debuted. Aespa also got Warner already. But for JYPE it took 4 years and years of complaints from stays to realise "oh shit we're wasting their selling power" even though SKZ's US fandom is bigger than both. This may be only tangentially related to festivals themselves, but does say something about JYPE and US promo.

    Second, the simplest explanation:

This is the first summer in while where, due to loosened covid restrictions, it is possible for kpop artists to attend.

However, all groups' activities have been more or less planned for 2022 already.

Stray Kids will be touring in June and July (they have a lot of stops), then in August they have to prepare for their speculated September comeback. They'll barely have free time this summer. Itzy are currently occupied with their comeback and will also begin touring soon. Twice will also be busy, I think.

    Perhaps their schedules would clash.

Perhaps JYPE just doesn't care about promoting their artists.

Perhaps we'll get news about it soon.

    No one knows.

  • JYPE has the most successful girl group in Japan in Kpop history. They hold practically every record and are with a major label yet Twice haven't even played a proper Japanese festival in spite of the huge demand yet. And no Kohaku doesn't count. That's Japans most prestigious and illustrious year end event, not really a actual festival, in their music market. When you're invited to that you simply don't say no. It would be a massive insult.

Several much much less successful groups in Japan have played festivals like Sonic, etc. It's pretty obvious JYPE doesn't care to push their groups in that manner yet.

Just look at 88Rising, they have said multiple times how much they like Twice in the past going as far back as about 2018. Obviously if JYPE wanted they could have had Twice play as a guest on their Coachella set, but if they don't push them even in Japan for that kind of thing, why would they do it in US?

  • JYP groups just aren't that popular in the west.

    They mostly have SEA fans.

This trend in the company is so baffling. They're doing basically the same thing for SKZ, so many artists have said they want to collab yet none became reality, they could also go to more popular variety shows like Jessi once said she wanted to have SKZ on Showterview, yet they never went.

afaik JYPE also made Jeongyeon reject an acting role? Am I remembering that correctly or have I mixed it up with something?

  • Jyp are not as desperate as sm to pay for a spot. The opposite they are desperate but for money, so unless it's a concert they get high return from, nope

  • Stray Kids and that new emo-pop group they signed make sense for festivals in the future

  • i think straykids would be a good choice

  • I hope ITZY though coz they're going to destroy the stage for sure.

  • they have that Wonder Girls "failure" trauma and they even managed to tour with the Jonas Brothers. I feel that's why they take their sweet time w every group. Honestly if skz dont take the initiative to communicate that they want to perform at festivals then they just won't.

Kpop right now is far more accepted as a music genre than ever before so it makes sense that they're finally being considered to be in music festivals (long overdue) At the same time, if youre stablished enough then you can easily just tour on your own, have a whole show cater to you and make more profit. 2ne1 and Big Bang wouldve killed it on music festivals and for the new gen i can see skz being well received aside from bp and bts
