I have seen many people expressing that they wish for the visual position in a group to go away, but I believe that the visual position will never go away in Kpop.
The visual position will remain a fixture in a group because even when no official positions are listed, fans often "assign" the visual position to a certain member, and this assignment is almost always universal among the fanbase. Examples include Heejin of Loona, Wonyoung of Iz*one, and Xiaoting of Kep1er. All of these groups have no official positions (with the exception of leader) yet these members are still seen as the visuals of these groups nonetheless.
Therefore, say a group debuts with no official visual. Nevertheless, the public will select a member or two for their visuals and they will be treated as such. Even if the visual position were to go away, it would be in formal name only, and the implications of the visual position would remain.
