I don't think life is simpler and easier nowadays
People used to be born in classes so they only have limited number of opportunities, they took what they could and made the best of it. No one expected a peasant son to become a great scientist or artist.
Now media has somehow convinced everyone no matter how bad someone's initial conditions are, they can become a billionaire. We no longer consider people who have more disadvantageous backgrounds and just somehow expect them to achieve as much as everyone else.
