Rie Hata


  • I. Introduction

    Known as the "Queen of Swag" Rie Hata is a Japanese-Filipino hip hop dancer, teacher, choreographer and entrepreneur who has worked with artists including BTS, Lisa, EXO, Twice, Chris Brown, Omarion, NCT, Stray Kids, Zico, BoA, Nissy, Red Velvet, Exile and Ateez. Additionally, she has choreographed ads for brands like Nike and Toyota. She is also the leader of the Queen of Swag Dance Crew and the director of the dance crew, Avex Royal Brats.


    II. Career

    Hata began her career publishing YouTube dance videos in 2008. At the age of 19, she was selected as the first Japanese dancer for Lady Gaga. She began working in performances and videos like Lady Gaga's "Telephone" and Chris Brown's "Party" before gaining renown as a choreographer for music videos and performances in Western, K-pop and J-pop.


    Beginning in 2017, she danced in and choreographed the "Artist" video for Zico, then began a number of iconic videos for K-pop artists, including BTS, NCT, BoA, Twice, EXO and Red Velvet. She received a VMA nomination for her work with frequent collaborators BTS for "Boy With Luv." She also choreographed for dance survival shows like Hit the Stage and Hot Blood Dance Crew, concert tours for Exile and TV ads. She has a distinctive, dramatic "swaggy" attitude and style to her energetic, often difficult choreography.


    She is also an influencer and entrepreneur with her own product lines. She is the director of the dance crew avex ROYALBRATS from Japan's first professional dance league, D. League. In 2021, she was selected in Newsweek Japan's 100 Most Admired Japanese People in the World.
