BP have one of the best name + fandom name combinations in Kpop.
"Baby Monster" might sound cool in some countries (can't judge), but anyone above a certain age wouldn't normally want to say they stan a group called Baby Monster in most Western countries, I think.
Almost anything else would have been better.
And yes, I think YG did want Blinks to jump ship. Just like he wanted 2NE1 fans to move to BP.

Also the conditions of that time were very favorable for K-pop groups to shine in the West, and the ones who took the best advantage of it were BP and BTS. Right now, there are too many groups, and the K-pop impact is in a stagnation period.

There had always been Kpop fans beyond Asia, especially since Gen 2, but that was way more a niche thing. Around 2017-2018, the global door was kicked open wide. Several groups debuting from the start of Gen 4 jumped into that, with Stray Kids being the leader of the BGs, I'd say. However, there was not a winner take (almost) all situation like there was with BP and BTS kicking open that door really wide. There is too much competition from groups that can also fill pretty large venues in the West. Competition between Gen 4 and Gen 5 GGs is even stronger in my view. I know people call it 5th gen now, but 4th gen never really took over domination from 3rd gen as their two biggest groups are still there and expected to be active again. So all these Gen 4 and Gen 5 groups are competing hard with each other and we can't even call a clear top 3 of Gen 4, even though we're already in Gen 5 now. For me, it's like Gen 4 is still gaining steam, but then we already have a Gen 5.
This while it was pretty clear who the top groups were in Gen 3 and before, when the Gen had not finished.
It's a bit of a weird situation that both the biggest GG and the biggest BG of a previous gen still remain biggest two gens later. That never happened before. One other advantage BP and BTS have now is that their fans grew up with them and often stayed loyal. A large part of the fandom is working instead of at school, which means spending money on their faves is now not a big deal for many of them. This while Gen 4 and Gen 5 fans tend to be younger and having to save up from their allowance to buy an album, for instance.
So though the global pie became much bigger, it's being cut up into way more pieces than it used to be, with two from an earlier gen still holding a large piece of the pie.

Like someone else mentioned above: they got a lot of exposure to the world's biggest Kpop fandom.
Now they got lots of other stuff as well going for them, but it was definitely a factor.
Most ARMY I knew were streaming at least some of their songs.
For me, I just kept hearing about them through Hybe channels and then checked them out. Loved Super Shy and also sometimes listened to their others songs.

Happy you found a good fandom place. I found one too, where there is almost 0 fanwars and other crazy behavior.
When I still used to check the bad app, I would often see all kinds of sh*tty behavior being justified by "but they do it too."
That is not a justification. If an idol does something sh*tty, okay criticize. That is a different matter, but don't go being hateful after innocent idols because some idiot from another fandom says your faves suck.
Even dumber if the "fan" of the other group OBVIOUSLY was no fan at all, but just posing as one to either deflect the hate from their own faves or because they wanted to start a fanwar.
Like they would say "Group XYZ better" and people started hating group XYZ, without thinking for a second longer.
There are definitely ARMY that charged like a bull at things like that, while they were obviously being missled (just like the bulls are missled with the red in bullfighting). Goes for other fandoms looking for an excuse to start something about BTS or other idols as well. THINK, people. Geez.

I don't think Hybe and Army were carrying them to early success. Their songs were hits and refreshing which is why people gravitated to the group. I do agree them debuting as a Hybe group does generate more hype than debuting elsewhere. So, that part helped a bit with early success but you still need to have good music to do most of the work.
Lots of ARMY were streaming them.
But yes, they had good music too. Super Shy was one of my top streamed songs of the year.
Too bad it ended up this way.
