Blame the company 4th gen are so restricted then can’t even hang out with others idols, they have barely any freedom that’s why they are so awkward in front of a camera
Especially watching joy on showterview, her staff were taking notes and joy is a well established idol since 2014, so it’s probably even more monitored for 4th gen idols, who have more of a ‘perfect’ image to uphold.
Omg, I totally forgot about Yena, imo she’s easily the strongest 4th gen variety idol. Yuqi is also great but I feel like she shines more on Chinese variety shows. Yuna has potential too, I can see her being a Sooyoung type character in the future

groups like snsd and suju had great variety skills but I haven’t really seen any 4th gen groups with like good variety skills (not counting their own reality shows). I also don’t really know any individual 4th gen idols who are good at variety like idols such as Mijoo and Sungjae.
Do you think these skills are still important for a following? I feel like variety is still insanely important for gp recognition, hence why 4th gen idols aren’t as popular with gp as previous gens. Also we have to keep in mind that these skills get developed over time, but most 4th gen idols don’t seem to have that natural variety spark.
Also who are some 4th gen idols who genuinely have excelled on variety shows?

Yes absolutely, and it’s not even just main vocalists, their leads and sub-vocals are usually very solid as well. SM have just been very consistent with their vocals over the years and their vocals always meet a certain standard

You can have good songs which aren’t vocally based or insanely high, sound good live and be praised for it while having minimal technique like StayC’s Stereotype. Plus stayc are also called a vocal group so it’s a win win.
if they do put in high notes, it should be rarely, and idols can just like belt them out in the studio, strain it live once or twice and then just avoid it with a backing track.
Even idols with better technique, strain and regress when doing vocally heavy songs just due to the stressful nature of idol life, like Yuju and Taeyeon (although she worked hard to recover, this won’t happen for most idols), so companies should just avoid super high/vocal heavy songs.

The chinese trainees that got eliminated first round of gp999 and avoided mass c-group evil editing plus losing pretty much any sort of confidence they had in themselves (shoutout to xu ziyin who straight up left the show), but all the c-trainees were apparently treated horribly on that show so idk if that counts

tbh best dance performance is kind of a misleading title for the award. It should be best charting viral dance or something. But also mnet is just strange, like why did they nominate bambi for dance and not vocal, I’m genuinely confused. Either way, chungha is always robbed

Nuevo isn't a new word. It means "new" in Spanish.
Edit: Is "kosmo" something to do with the universe? Cause that isn't new either then.
Ah sorry wasn’t aware of that, I think aespa’s version is actually Nu Evo, not sure if that’s based off the Spanish word or what it means in aespa’s universe tbh. Kosmo is also partially made up but also based off cosmo.
But either way, point still stands about foreign words/pronunciation being a major draw to aespa’s music which I don’t see fading for a while, kinda like how Koreans were drawn in by GD’s pronunciation for years.

2016 for most iconic 3rd gen gg music and 2020 for 3/4th gen best releases:
pwf/boombayah/the album
So bad
rough/navillera/mago
TT/Cheer up/ICSM (eyes wide open album)
Wannabe
Fiesta(bloom iz album)/SSOTS
don’t really follow boy groups but BTS and Seventeen’s 2015/2016/2017 discography was flawless, plus we got energetic and limitless.
2019 was the worst imo cause it started the whole teen crush/noise music trend. The only saving graces were psycho/ fancy/feel special

Objectively, yes Ningning, Winter and Karina have better technique than Bora but my opinion as a trained vocalist is that technique isn’t the only thing that makes a strong vocalist. Bora is great at singing (despite being objectively weak technically) cause she has great tone, musicality, stability and emotes well. There are so many more things than just technique that make a great vocalist, especially in kpop, and this is super obvious looking at popular vocals (who are technically weak) in kpop atm like IU, Rose, Bora etc. Kpop isn’t that deep people are allowed to have different opinions and preferences, sorry for the essay lol.

For real though, if they spent half as much time as they do messing around with her face into promoting her, she would literally be 100x as big as she is now
