Yeah they are without a doubt.

The only way to know how new jeans is going to do is after the next few times they release music. The performance imo will be somewhere in between the fans over expectation and the haters under expectation.

I would say RV and Gidle are about the same. MMM is not really in the top league category.

Nobody on this forum is more familiar with the third generation girl group hierarchy than I am. I'm confident in that, and anyone who thinks the top three girl groups was static every year is just proving they weren't actually an active fan during third generation or know nothing about the statistical accomplishments of each group.

Of the big five girl groups in third generation, Mamamoo had the second highest peak and second best performing song behind only the biggest domestic hit of BLACKPINK's career. The year prior, they and BP released new albums at the exact same hour and Mamamoo outcharted them and debuted higher while setting a then new MelOn record for 24 hour unique listeners. By 2018, Mamamoo was so popular that they released a B-Side with zero promotions at all and it got a Real-Time All Kill.

That's how popular they were at their peak.

Today, Mamamoo have the most cumulative unique listeners of any girl group in MelOn history.

Few things in K-Pop truly trigger me, but Mamamoo success erasure to push the Big 3 label agenda is guaranteed to make me feel some type of way. I fought in the trenches of girl group fandoms wars for years so that Mamamoo got the respect they deserved, and I'll never sit idly by and watch them get downplayed, especially in a year where the only girl group who outperformed them in totality was BLACKPINK.

And I didn't even talk about Hwasa and how she rose to prominence in 2018, or the fact that Mamamoo today is STILL the only girl group with MULTIPLE members who not only have #1 hit songs but PAKs (both Wheein and Hwasa).

Also, Mamamoo had a four to five year stretch of a group song or solo song hitting #1 on the charts, so just because I praised 2018 as their peak doesn't mean they didn't have any hit songs outside of it.

Just remember that the first girl groups to get a PAK in third gen didn't belong to the Big 3--it was GFriend and Mamamoo in that order.

Now I'm going to have to make a Mamamoo thread, because you opened Pandora's Box for some reason (honestly, why did you feel compelled to go after Mamamoo? I barely referenced them).

Gidle as a whole get ignored a lot for the absolute powerhouse they are in China. It’s no joke.

Not a soul in Korea doesn't believe NewJeans is the top group in Korea.

AKP no lifers lie, but Gallup Surveys and numbers never do. aespa wasn't even close to NewJeans in majority of these metrics.

I'm honestly so amused by every single remotely salty response. Like, this was the EASIEST year to DEFINITIVELY take the crown from NewJeans; it's a year where their very existence has been threatened, and nobody really came close to doing it.

They're still by far Korea's favorite girl group.

This response has nothing to do with what I said. It’s a fact that their 2024 releases did not beat aespa. And nothing will change this.

They were riding off their success from previous years in 2024. Which is completely fine. As they were great years. They just didn’t do anything remarkable in 2024. Still a solid year though as they were a solid #2 behind aespa even in their “flop era”.

Let’s see how it goes for them without HYBE in 2025!

I don’t think either of aespa or new jeans have done enough for their song writing to become a vital part of the discussion.

It’s ok to treat pop idols as pop idols. They are primarily singers and performers and it’s ok to only judge those things.
