Why SM never pushes Red Velvet/f(x) as hard as Aespa?

  • Just an assumption, but SM had it easy with Girls Generation and TVXQ, so they were going by brand to bring them popularity. They debuted Exo and they shot up to the top as well. But the 3rd gen taught them that the name SM was not enough to become the most popular group. As proven with the mid level of Exo and RV, so now they're trying everything and anything for Aespa and NCT.

What the... stop this history rewrite. EXO didn't shoot up to the top at all. In fact, for a year and a half they were called a 'flop' and mocked by stans of other companies and competing boy groups, due to their lacklustre results and weak debut. Only when they had a megahit with Growl, things started to take off.

But that should tell you everything, that the 'SM brand' with the megasuccess and mega popularity of SM groups like SNSD, TVXQ, Super Junior couldn't get EXO the flying start that YG and JYP groups with less effort could at their debut.

In fact, all SM groups consistently have weak starts, only to rise up in the years ahead.

I also find it laughably wrong how EXO are called 'mid level' when they were the #1 boy group for quite some years since 2012 and #2 boy group when BTS became #1. If that's the definition of 'mid level' you might as well call TWICE mid level for having BP above them.

  • Neither has charted on bb200 and aespa has so this makes 0 sense.

That’s the whole point. Your first post made zero sense

How can you say RV needed to sell more in the USA to justify them ever going to caochella yet CL who performed is pretty much a non issue in USA. Epic high performed last year year and they never set the world on fire either. Now Aespa is going and again they never set any records.

  • I like both groups but personally I think RV's music has more appeal and potential for success in the western market but because they are in their 8th year, sm probably doesn't see the long-term gains of investing in RV to push them into the western market. When RV was in their 3rd or 4th year and sm may have thought it more worthwhile from a long-term business standpoint, kpop just wasn't as big in the west as it is now and sm would've seen it as a huge financial risk.

So it makes sense that sm is pushing aespa instead from a business standpoint (even though I think it's a shame that they're not also pushing RV). Not sure if the very first big venture for aespa in the us (i'm not counting lip synced us tv performances here) being coachella is the smartest move by sm though (as opposed to starting with a us-focused music release or a us tour)
