Current ranking of k-pop groups in South Korea

  • Based on their recent performances (let's say last 1-2 years/last 2-3 comebacks) on k-charts, how would you rank the boy groups and girl groups combined?

I think it's something like this?

    1. BTS

    2. Blackpink

    3. Aespa

    4. Oh My Girl

    5. Red Velvet

    6. I-dle

    7. IVE? (their 1st comeback is still in progress)

    8. Brave Girls

    9. STAYC

    10. TWICE

One boy group, nine girl groups. Six 3rd gen groups, four 4th gen groups.

I did check boy groups too, but aside from BTS it's embarassing how badly they do on the digital charts in Korea.

Is it what you had expected? Or how do you think the ranking should be.

  • Brave girls and twice don't chart better than some bgs now ;(

Even nct, who do poorly on kcharts, outdid OMG, Twice and Brave Girls latest cb? What the hell is wrong with koreans

  • If you mean charting wise sure.

But actual popularity twice is #4 right behind aespa.

  • IVE actually shouldnt be there.

Would that mean Mamamoo on position 10?

Why are boy groups underperforming in digitals.

  • 1. Bigbang

    2. BTS

    3. Blackpink

    4. Aespa

    5. Red velvet

Many doubted bigbang's digital prowess after all thats been and the chart changes, they answered by pulling numbers not seen since the chart change almost two years ago and took up where they left of.

With the two exceptions above they have always underperformed digitally compared to girlgroups

  • Now that BTS shattered the boundaries of kpop and has allowed it to become global, I'll never understand the fixation on this small, insignificant country. All artists from all over the world who become relevant do it not because they're big in their home country, but because they are big all over the world, namely the US, Europe and Japan. Music is global.

Even before BTS did their thing, most kpop companies had eyes on Japan and China, so again, if Korea has never been enough for these companies, that they had to look at other markets, why do these kpop fans talk about Korea like they matter when it's so obvious that they don't.

Stans keep looking at korean charts cause most groups can't even crack a top 10-20 in japan, let alone western markets

Beacuse it matter for the artists themselves who live in korea. Most groups/idols will never reach the success or fame of the exceptions like BTS and Blackpink currently. Some 10 member boygroup selling a million of albums overseas where the label will take the majority of income will still not reach anywhere close to what the top domestic celebrities in korea make.

Getting known in korea means a bigger chance of a lasting career after your idol life is over, bigger cf deals, and not to speak of fame and status in your own home country. If you sought fame, what would you rather want, that 1 out of 100k recognizes you in twenty different countries, or that 5/10 or even 1/100 recognizes you in your own country?

And getting big all over the world have been and still is reserved mostly for english speaking artists. Japan which you mention for example, the biggest acts are basically irrelevant outside of it, and so it is for most of the artists in the world.

Well, most groups cant crack that in korea either, boygroups especially who can barely enter top 100 even.

Calling South Korea irrelevant is harsh i mean it do hold some significance since it's their home country but i do agree that a lot of kpop fans put way too much weight in domestic success like the world is so big plus being globally popular will always be better than only domestic popularity.

  • i think we should separate each generation? some of 3rd gens are not active like bp and twice so it's hard to tell

Ignoring South Korea for K-pop would be like ignoring Japan for anime, manga and Sony and Nintendo games.

Like some already said, it's the home country for K-pop and K-pop artists. Succeeding there carries a lot of weight.

Amazing. On a Kpop site. A fan of a Korean group. Still racist.

Maybe not racist, but it's certainly odd to ignore the impact of South Korea on K-pop groups and K-pop in general.
