Symbolism in BIGBANG's "Still Life" MV

  • What were some things you noticed?

    My observations:

    • GD's rainbow-colored umbrella and hair symbolized the light that comes after tough times, triumph through adversity. Of course, because after a rainfall comes a rainbow. There's still life after hardship. He takes on the role of a director on a film set.
    • Taeyang's scenes are very biblical. I think I see a Noah's Ark reference. Note the ship. It's very true to who he is as a Christian man and now a husband and father. Noah was a man who believed in God's glory and trusted God, so he survived the hard times. Noah endured hard times and ultimately realized his perseverance was worth it.
    • T.O.P.'s scene was deeply about isolation and loneliness. We know about what T.O.P. had to deal with. Not only did he face scrutiny from society, but he always felt a bit like a misfit. He's out in outer space while Earth is in the background.
    • The only symbolism I noticed about Daesung's scenes was in the beginning, when it turned from black-and-white to color. His hair texture also changed. Obvious symbolism for growth and transformation.

    This is spot on^

And there's definitely a lot a biblical symbolism in Taeyang's part but I haven't tried to analyze any of it yet

  • For a change, might not be the right thread to post this but if anyone wants to avoid the negativity regarding BB's comeback happening here, they can go on reddit, I'm loving all the comments getting posted there, I'm seeing only positivity and fans getting nostalgic like us there.

  • Ooh I didn't make the Noah's Ark connection. I was just thinking of the shipwrecked boat as a metaphor for all the turmoil Bigbang have been through and then the flowers blooming in it as them growing and moving on. The flowers also look a bit like a sea of lightsticks, which they show later and have played with before as imagery (in Flower Road).

In T.O.Ps scene, he's got a rabbit mask on, which has to be reference to the old moon rabbit folktale. Apparently, that's a symbol of rebirth in Korea, which seems very fitting.

It also shows up in a famous Korean children's song:

High above the deep blue sky, down the Milky Way,
Rides a ship without a sail, with no oars they say,
Ship of white, its only crew, is a rabbit white,
Westward it floats along, silently through the night

    I'm sure there's loads of references I haven't caught yet. It's a gorgeous video.
