Koreans are expressing anger over the rising cost for chicken delivery.

On the 13th, delivery platform Baemin announced they'll be changing how they calculate the delivery fee for drivers attracting attention.

Baemin will calculate fees based on "delivery distance based on expected travel route" compared to previous standard of "straight travel distance" from restaurant to the destination. The new standard will take into account whether driver travels through alleys to complete the delivery.

The system for short delivery services will also be changed and cost of delivery will be borne by the consumer. Customers can expect to be charged between 5,000 to 6,000 won for delivery.

Baemin will also be charging a "fare type system" to restaurant owners. It will charge 6.8% broker fee and 6,000 won for basic delivery, broker fee of 15% and 900 to 2,900 won for (basic plus) delivery and 27% broker fee and 27% delivery fee for an integrated model. The rate charged will depend on what plan the restaurant owner chooses. The fee paid by the platform to the driver will be different from the delivery fee paid by the customer.

Meanwhile, customers lamented over the rising costs stating, "every time I order food, I worry about the deliver cost but they're increasing it again?"

    1. [+5,092, -75] I'm done with delivery!! From now on I'm buying direct ~~ I deleted the app!
    2. [+2,844, -50] There was never a fee before until Baemin came out... Baemin started with the damn delivery fees!
    3. [+1,506, -47] Since when is it ok to charge thousands of won for a chicken delivery? I'd rather order take out and get some exercise out of it. Who is the delivery for exactly that they're charging that much for chicken?
    4. [+1,124, -177] Delivery fee? Why pay a delivery fee? Just order to go and go get it?
    5. [+860, -144] I understand charging a fee to make the delivery but there is a limit to things. I wouldn't be surprised if they start charging us for the packaging next.
    6. [+415, -5] Guys, it doesn't take any more than 10 min if you go by car or 30 mins if you walk to a mart or cafe like the U.S. Most people live within 10 min walking distance to a chicken restaurant or bakery. Let's order take out instead and stop using these apps altogether!
    7. [+122, -6] ?? Since when did we start charging to deliver jajangmyeon from a Chinese restaurant? I never had to pay for delivery in the past.
    8. [+108, -2] Baemin is destroying small businesses in our country. Boycott is the only answer!
    9. [+19, -3] Then buy it and pick it up yourself you idiots! Would it kill you to go out for once?
    10. [+17, -2] Then stop being lazy and go pick it up yourself!
  • Koreans didn't have to pay for delivery!? Bruh...

Here, you have to pay tax, delivery fees, AND you have to tip the driver. Now, because gas prices are so high, they are even talking about adding an additional fuel charge. I don't know who will be paying that. Companies or consumers. :clown:

This is why I might order delivery every other month. Especially living in LA with terrible traffic, high surcharges, and high gas prices. I paid $40 (which includes tip) to get some cookies delivered this weekend.

    wtf

I bake best cookies and it takes me less than 30 min, if you got an oven try it

  • If you want to eat junk food, atleast walk to pick it up yourself

get some exercise on the way

Exactly! If I lived in a country like Korea that had universal transit, Good AND efficient transit at that (since I prefer not to drive), I probably would rarely order delivery. I pretty much walk everywhere to get my take out (unless it's outside of my immediate vicinity).

I pay for the convenience. I'm not really a cooker/baker. Plus, there are a few bakeries I could walk to from where I live, but I really wanted to try this place since they had some specialty cookies that weren't offered anywhere else. And I knew I wasn't about to bake a "panda" or strawberry cheesecake cookie lol.

Terrible thing is...I'm probably going to order it again. :clown:

  • I bake best cookies and it takes me less than 30 min

    microwave cookies for ~2mins

  • why is chicken being singled out

Dunno but for me personally if my Red oil dumplings came cold I would be kinda miffed having to deal with solidified chili oil.

I think they were specifically talking about fried chicken, once they are cold they are stale and its probably such a staple there.

Fried chicken can't be stuck in the fridge and then microwaved again, you have to store it in a glass container to keep extra moisture out and then have to pop it in an air fryer or risk burning it on a pan or convection oven.

  • I haven't DoorDashed since gas prices went up and I don't even want to know how high things are going on there.

i wouldn't know tbh since they only food i have ever had delivred to me was family size pizza boxes lol. otherwise, if i am not already eating out, i just order take out and then go get by car, i live 5 to 10 minutes away from every single café or restraurant i would ever want to eat from.

bc its literally a food group of its own when it comes to Korean diet

  • i literally never had anything delivered to my house in my entire life.

i used to live in the middle of a big city and those days i would just walk 8 minuts to the nearest mcdonalds, and subway and the store to geet whatever i wanted to eat
