How come Exo and SuJu didn't blow up in Japan?

Changed the title of the thread from “How come Eco and SuJu didn't blow up in Japan?” to “How come Exo and SuJu didn't blow up in Japan?”.
  • EXO's popular there, but they didnt get more popular because of bad management. They debuted with a re-recorded single more than 3 years after their debut, them they release another single in 2016 and then, 2 years later they released their first album, 6 years into their career and it was when they were releasing their album that they made their first tv appearence on Japan.

Avex never spoiled their japanese fans, they only milked them making EXO touring there. That's what Japan was for SM/Avex: only a place they used to go to tour.

But they had such a big potential to hit big there. Growl became popular on Japan in 2013 and they sold more than 150k with XOXO, a non-japanese album. Still, they only debuted there 2 years later.

I could write a WHOLE BOOK about how EXO was mistrated and a waste of potential by their agency, cause I have so much to say

  • Well SM/Avex did absolutely nothing to try make EXO bigger. They had so much potential. Growl was huge there, and in 2015 they were the youngest Korean act to sell out Tokyo Dome (and with did 3 dates in a row) and the first Korean act to do so without any Japanese release. What did SM/Avex do with that? Not much. They released their first full length Japanese album in 2018... Before that they had a single album (Jap version of Love Me Right lol) in 2015 and it topped Oricon. But after that Japanese fans barely got anything except for concerts. They only had 1 other single in late 2016 then nothing until 2018. Even EXO's sub-unit has more Japanese songs than the main group lmao..

Despite this EXO is still popular, especially considering the lack of promo/push.

  • Define "popular".

Suju has been touring Japan for years with their Super Shows selling out. They've even successfully sold out Tokyo Domes for consecutive days and broke records (see below).

They've sold out 3-days-in-a-row Saitama Arena (4th largest indoor arena in the world) last year and apparently most expensive tickets in Japan.
