Just saw a post where her fan votes for SMA was 27000, while the BGs, LYW had in 100000+.
Lilac is the very first time in a looooong career, where she got an Album daesang.
Fan votes and physical sales are two good indicators of fandom.
So no, IU doesn't have a 'big' fandom, comparable to the top BGs, GGs OR even more interesting, proportional to get digital domination
Ughh..it is the same post.. Changed titles..
Ok nevermind.

a lot of IU's korean fandom i don't think is the type to vote or be invested in kpop award shows
The word "Fan" has no; more definition than the word "idol".
It is debatable whether IU is an idol, similarly it is debatable if her "fans" are fans.
When every other fandom is noted by their activities in voting and purchase of physical albums, hers are noted by the lack of votes, lack of physical purchases.
But guess it is ok, she is an exception to most trends of k-pop, this was well.

She’s like most popular western artists in America. They have more casual listeners than actual “fans”. They rarely buy physicals and aren’t invested in polls or awards. But they do buy/stream the latest release digitally.

I would agree about the "casual fans", but for her ULs. If her fans were only "casual", her title songs wouldn't be getting 500K - 800K ULs, in the first day or two of release.
That means people are actively looking for and listening to her releases, whereas casual means, listening once in a while, when a curated medium pushes the song in the feed or such.

In general though popular artists will sell alot in the first week of a newly release song/album.
I’m more interested on what kind of fandom Lim Young Woong has. Because he won the Popularity Award which is based on Knet viewer votes and he got way more votes than anyone else….

Here's a recent thread I created that's related to this topic, replete with 10 pages of discussion. The takeaway was basically that fandom size isn't necessarily an accurate predictor of voting results.

Has IU ever explained why that is her stage name?
The second sentence from her Wikipedia page:
The name IU is a combination of 'I' and 'you' meaning "you and I become one through music."
