What people seem to not understand about being poor is you can work and work and work yourself to the bone but it is not guaranteed you will make it out of being poor. I got lucky by getting accepted into a school for smart kids in high school and getting multiple trade certifications thanks to it, which has now lead to the job I have now, it still took years of work. But even then, I was not guaranteed to succeed, because of how the job landscapes still are. There still is very much lots of sexual harassment, discrimination and judgement of people based on looks and not their qualifications, in the workplace and it makes it ridiculously hard to find work. Also, many jobs expect you to drop everything for them so you can cover someone's shift but then will fire you when you get taken out of work on an ambulance or have a family emergency. It makes it really really hard to be able to find something that will give you the ability to get out of being poor. Also, many people who truly are struggling avoid using government assistance because they were shamed for their parents needing it for a year or two when they were children, so they just continue to work dead end jobs and have to decide between rent or food. It is really saddening.
