That's kinda smart, the way things are going it'll probably take many years before SM launches another new girl group, so it's nice for female SM trainees to have another outlet, like a girl group of a subsidiary.
I mean, Super Junior and SNSD were also formed around trainees that weren't included in CSJH The Grace and DBSK, and look how successful they became 
But those were the days that SM still launched groups every 1-2 years, so the waiting was less.

It’s hard to get exact info on the lore but there are lot of theories. It started with their video teasers, there are clues in the lyrics and in the photos too.
It’s certain that it’s about a girl Billlie who disappeared at 11. Umu from the Reacttokpop channel said girls disappearing at night, 11 o’clock a fearsome intruder appears and takes away girls to the other side of the world…so Billie asked the girls to stay together to keep her safe but they were all busy. After Billlie disappeared they feel guilty and try to find her.

Woolim was also a subsidiary of sm at one point, but sm never make a benefit about them and woolim decide to cut ties
i think it's more about SM wanting to be a diverse company more than benefit
that's why they doesn't really interfere in their subsidiary business and let them manage themselves
in contrary of HYBE for example where every subsidiary are under big hit
but the ceo supervise everything the subsidiary do and need to get their approval
