I'm not a fan but what 4th gen group has already surpassed RV???? lmao
Current popularity =/= all-time popularity. RV's overall impact is far greater than any current 4th gen group, give them a couple more years and then try trolling this topic again. Because if that were the case and current trendiness means they're bigger then that means NCT/Seventeen are bigger than EXO/Big Bang. Aespa is already bigger than SNSD too? This isn't meant to put anyone down and I like all the groups mentioned which is why I used them.
Red Velvet has and always will be a top group because they've been established as one and have made their impact. They're apart of kpop history and made many hits regardless if they're trendy or not anymore.

Well Red Velvet sold considerably less than say Iz*One, but IZ is already borderline forgotten. RV has songs, hits, so they are known and have a legacy that spans 7 years of on and off success with fandom, though small, and general public so that last a lot longer in memory than just sales.
Sure they might have fallen a spot behind Aespa right now, but isn't that expected? As time goes by newer groups will start to sell more, get more views, chart better as no one stays on top or close to the top forever.
4th gen gg's will be lucky to have half the lifespan of 3rd gen, look at Itzy 3 years in and on a downward spiral with the public since mid 2020. StayC had a mini hit with Asap and now look, Stereotype massively underperformed and they are brand new and already facing the prospect of declining fast.

With less active 3rd gen groups like Red Velvet, EXO, Mamamoo and the likes it might seem that 4th gen surpassed, but that is in the "now"
These groups in the past had higher peaks than what their current performance show, its just that with time, a group hits their peak and stagnates or falls, they can't keep making hits after hits forever.
When 4th gen groups pass the 5 year mark, you can compare them to the older groups, it is then when they would have hit a peak in their career or their career trajectory is known

RV debuted during scandal of SM artist way back then. This group got privilege as single active group because snsd and f(x) had no comeback at all since 2015 and 2016 but RV never outsold SNSD unlike aespa that able to outsold rv in short time
Each comeback before scandal, rv has always been promoted in Korea. They attended all music shows, radio, variety shows, appeared in year endo show etc. Aespa as rookie appearances are less than rv during active cb. Yet, aespa able to get PAK 10 month within debut, outsold rv album sales and digitals. Got 2 Hit title tracks with barely promoted in korea. So no excuses

Maybe in 2021 considering their last comeback didn't do as well for the long hiatus, but Psycho is overall a bigger hit than anything 4th gen have put out. It's almost bigger than fancy (twice's biggest song there) on spotify

I'm aware very aware of what op said. Red Velvet was considered top #3 group in the ranking with BlackPink and Twice above them. Since we are talking about just Red Velvet here, I didn't think there needed to be any clarification. But obviously, yes, Red Velvet is not the no.1 girl group (I never said they were nor do I even know why you are bringing that up).
As for the SNSD part, I'm not even going to bother arguing about it because it would only be a waste of time.
