These a dreads and everyone can have these and there have been European folks who had their hair like this ( Vikings)... Dreadlocks can’t be claimed as it’s something that naturally occurs if you don’t comb your hair no matter the texture.
But there are African rooted tribes or religions where dreadlocks have a very important meaning. The Rastafaries in Jamaica for example (that’s where most people these days know the hairstyle from).
And there are also a few tribes in Africa where the dreadlocks have a special meaning, like determining your rank within your community, for example it can only be worn by unmarried soldiers, not even women and if a man wants to get married he has to cut them off.
So dreadlocks have their roots in many areas.
