But there are African rooted tribes or religions where dreadlocks have a very important meaning. The Rastafaries in Jamaica for example (that’s where most people these days know the hairstyle from).
And there are also a few tribes in Africa where the dreadlocks have a special meaning, like determining your rank within your community, for example it can only be worn by unmarried soldiers, not even women and if a man wants to get married he has to cut them off.
So dreadlocks have their roots in many areas.
