Actually I think that's what makes it cool. It's like the butterfly effect: the smallest shit can have a disastrous effect of epic proportions. It reminds of the manga 20th Century Boys (adapted into 3 movies in Japan) which also has a main villain whose motivations are unclear until the very end.

Yeah same here, I also thought it was something bigger like the guy did something to his sister or that he had a very bad past. But I think they needed this storyline for the plot twist to make sense.
