Is NCT a hip hop group?

  • I've only listened to a handful of songs from NCT but from the little I've heard they sound like they are a YG group more than an SM group to me.

And no please don't link a million NCT songs that aren't hip hop cause I'm not going to listen to them. Boy groups are too cringe for me.

And while we're on the subject. When is kpop going to apologize to Black America?

Theres inspiration and theres paying homage. There is also straight up theft. Kpop as a whole is straight up theft.

  • and why Kpop should apologize to black america

i don't see every white western artist doing jazz, hip hop or blues apologizing to black american

I can't speak for Jazz and Blues but the two biggest white hip hop stars of all time Vanilla Ice and Eminem always gave credit where credit was due.

Vanilla Ice's only hit is plagiarized.

What do you mean by credit? It’s no secret that hip-hop belongs to black culture. Kpop groups and agencies know that and never tried to hide it.

In fact the first ever Kpop artist (even before seotaiji but he had less impact because he got into drug controversy then temporarily retired). who introduced hip-hop to South Korea, was the first artist to dance sing and rap in one stage, Hyun Jinyoung said that he was taught by African American soldiers (some of the sources I read before just mentioned the word Americans, but some stressed on African/Black American) when he was a kid. That was the first artist in SM even before SM makes the trainee company system. They credited Black culture for the origins of Kpop even from those times in 1990 when worldwide media was non-existent.

Unless you mean something else by theft. If white Americans doing hiphop is homage what makes Korean different?

  • i feel like it depends on the unit? like 127 sure i see it, wayv or dream not really, no. and then there's U where it completely depends on what they're dropping

    :wellr:

  • No, I don't consider them Hip-Hop. They are a K-Popular group who dabbles in whatever is popular which includes rapping. Within the brand, they do have YangYang and Sungchan who have the potential to eventually come with something respectable especially with SME having historically weak sensibility in this area.

I think the karma of the situation will end up impacting some of the BIG-3 agency's expansion efforts.

It still isn't too late to self-correct, but they probably won't. SME, in particular, won't have anything credible until they show respect for the music and the people historically associated with it.

For example, Eminem has been very commerically successful. His skill and passion for the music and respect for the people made him legit. If SME doesn't take the proper steps to be competent and accountable, they'll never have anything that is credible. Commerical success without credibility is illegitimate.
