I haven't seen many J-dramas, but the ones from the 90s are probably their best. Isn't that the Golden era of Jdramas?
Anyways, my favorite J-drama so far (and I don't think anything will top it anytime soon) is Long Vacation. It doesn't have the kind of 'weird' Japanese acting that is prevalent in newer dramas and the story isn't outrageous.

I watched that drama a couple of years ago an rembember it was good. J-dramas and K-dramas from late 90ies/early 00ies can be very charming and good, even if I have not seen that many of them. A bit more "slice of life" dramas. Problem is that it's a bit hard to go back a watch dramas from that time because the big improvments in picture, sound and production quility since then.
Hard to pick my best J-drama, so many good ones and hard to rank them, dramas like Orange Days, Slow Dance, Last Christmas are only a few I remeber I liked a lot.
