    interesting...

i wonder what the reaction will be like to this

I'm sure it would be the usual. Many will accept the apology and many won't. Many will consider the context she provided and others won't.

I've seen the videos. Personally, I give people the benefit of the doubt, especially if it was something that occurred much earlier on. Given how racial issues weren't discussed on a mainstream level until recent years, I still don't expect everyone to know these slurs. That speaks more about where we are as a society as opposed to the character of any one person, especially someone who was just a kid at the time.

Schools teach the basics about the Chinese Exclusion Act, Japanese American internment, and maybe just a bit about anti-Asian propaganda if you're lucky, but they don't go into depth and they won't touch the slurs. We only learn about certain things thanks to the Internet, so if her first time hearing that word was through a popular song she found online, it's not farfetched that she thought it was just a harmless word.

Sometimes it takes honest mistakes for people to learn, grow, and eventually educate others on the issues. Ultimately, I respect her for this because she made a point to apologize and spread awareness even if she didn't have any ill intentions in the first place. I don't think it's fair to "cancel" her given the context and her apology.

  • that's pretty good that they teach something...it's better than nothing...

but then again I grew up in the 90s so racial stuff wasn't taught much...(even Australian racial stuff and we do have it here as well) and they certainly don't go into depth about slurs either, again that's a learn in your time/social thing lol

given that no one was explicitly harmed by what she said and did, compared to if she said it to someone or used it with improper intentions seems fine to me...after all I am a consequentialist and no harm no foul...

Upon first glance of any article or source about this, finding out she said the C-word seems awful and inexcusable, but it takes looking at the context to realize it's not what people think it is. She was essentially lip-syncing or reciting the lyrics of some song; that's far different from just saying it to be edgy or insult anyone.

She gracefully used her platform to make a genuine apology and it was clear she didn't have any ill will. That's what matters, so good on her.
