Can groups from the same gen even be compared

  • 2techs

Changed the title of the thread from “Are generations overrated?” to “Can groups from the same gen even be compared”.
  • Each group has their own sound and path to success. Generations have nothing to do with it, and most often than not, people aren't comparing them because of the generation they're from but because they are seeing similar amounts of success.

edit: while some groups from a generation can have songs with similar sounds, it's usually due to the trends that occurred during those years.

  • Since you changed your title, ima reply based on your new title.

I would say no. For example, we can't exactly compare physical sales of GGs of 2nd Gen to 3rd and 4th gen for example. It's like saying StayC who sold more albums than Sistar is more influential than Sistar that doesn't make sense. Digitals isn't a good comparison too since 2nd Gen is more on digital sales vs the current streaming era.

What we can compare maybe is how groups of the same generation compare in their relative popularity to other groups of other generations. For example, comparing the relative popularity of Wonder Girls in 2nd Gen to let's say Red Velvet in 3rd Gen. How would both groups match up and compare in terms of relative popularity among their own generation.

That's why we can roughly say like what are the top 5 groups of each generation, but it is hard to say what are the top 5 overall groups across all generations from gen 1 all the way to 4
