5th gen Kpop seems to be getting less content with mainstream korean entertainment

  • That’s quite interesting! Soloist taking over in favor of groups! This is what happened in the west! Boy and girl groups were everywhere in the 90s early 2000s then suddenly numbers dwindled and groups were rare

imo kpop filled in the role of groups globally but now it seems Korea is starting to prefer soloist. I genuinely wonder how long kpop will go on for :/ All good things or genres (in this case) usually come to an end! Kpop has been going on for 20+ (if not 30+ years). Will we see what happened in the west happen in the east/korea

  • This thread reminded me that "We got married" will never come back. I don't understand how people get genuinely jealous over idols, do people seriously think that they have a chance? I'm not a shipper either but seeing 2 idols freely indulge in something that they probably can't until they retire from the industry is peak entertainment.

I think kpop is in an interesting spot because they fill the void of bg/gg in the west. However, in Korea it does seem it might be the rise of soloist, but the soloist are mainly popular in Korea and not so much in the west. Unsure, if the soloist are popular in Asia, but it doesn't feel soloist that don't come from an idol background are popular in the west.

I guess it will be interesting to see what happens, but it feels there's less chances for a group outside of the big 4 will break out. Which could explain why it seems 5th gen is having less of an impact compared to 4th gen at this point in their respective generations.

  • I think it's a stream vs. physical sale revenue thing. It's whether they'd make a return on their investment if they solely rely on streams, since streams don't make that much money compared to physical sales...

    What about touring?

SKZ made $41,117,901 revenue in Latin America during the Dominate tour with only eight shows.

Twice made $17,560,927, with only four. That was just Brazil and Mexico, but speculation is that they will next time go to Chile and Peru as well, as SKZ did.

I suspect many k-pop artists will find greater success there than they will in Europe (as Twice did!). But only HYBE and JYPE seem interested in that market for some reason.

There is that, but I was solely focusing on those two, as being reliant on touring for revenue isn't a good thing in the long-term, due to burnout by artists.

  • This might be a hot take but I think it’s partially due to how western obsessed kpop has become.

Most companies create groups for the sole purpose of breaking out into the west so they put less effort into Korean promotions and what not and jump right away to international festivals and performances outside of Sokor.

  • It also seems like we're getting less acting from idols.

I wasn't as deep into K-pop at the time, but I vaguely remember 2nd gen idols being more involved with acting.

Global touring seems to be taking up idols' schedules. That's great because I like attending concerts, but at the same time, I also miss how things used to be. It seems like 2nd gen and 3rd gen idols had more time to do a bit of everything.

ISAC happened this year, but it seems like not as many people cared about it.
