Why Do We Still Prioritize Melon to Show Domestic success?

  • when the largest platform in korea is Youtube Music, most of my Korean friends use youtube music or spotify these days. Melon is bleeding users to these platforms. It predicted by next year or sooner it will be the third most used service behind youtube music and spotify. For an accurate representation of the domestic music scene in Korea, try YouTube or Spotify instead of relying solely on Melon. It is going the way of genie. Lets drop the Melon glorification. Its heyday is over.

Here is the current top 5 of Youtube trending Chart

    1) Jump by BP

    2) Golden by Huntr/x

    3) Dirty Work by Aespa

    4) Famous by AllDay Project

    5)This is Four by Twice

  • The best platform to judge domestic popularity of the song is Circle Digital Chart.

But still Melon is highly valued cuz it is the hardest one to rig. You can’t just top the chart by mass streaming or using vpn.

This is just your opinion. All chart companies do their best on bot streaming. Youtube also does this. All charts can be looked at but every year that passes the amount of importance on melon gets less. Also circle is great but it doesn't count youtube I believe which is a miss since it is the top chart in korea

  • I agree we should prioritise YouTube since Day6 is also the best there

    me too i agree!!!

  • anyways melon is still usable as an indicator

the reason why songs don't enter melon chart is because of the sheer amount of fandoms clogging up the top 100 list

if your song is truly a hit in korea it will end up high on melon top 100 no matter what

the reason why youtube music korea is easier to enter is because songs that are a year old are removed

fandoms also don't target mass streaming on yt korea

Im not sure how accurate the year this is as Illits magnetic is still charting on youtube and it is over a year old. Also wouldn't that mean that youtube would be more natural as it isn't as impacted by fandom streaming. I mean youtube does go hard on bot streaming these days as can be seen with the general downturn on youtube views in general on youtube.

    this is a fair conclusion

Melon has ULs system that Yt and Spotify doesn’t have. It is easy to mass stream and top YT and Spotify charts, but not Melon.

I will give you an example.

Supernova was doing 1.5m streams daily on Melon on its peak for weeks. And it was doing around 100k streams on Spotify. Similar streams on YT music(1.5m).

While for example Skz Babymonster have really good streams on YT, but they can’t top melon charts.

If you mass stream that amount on melon you won’t get to N1, but you can get to N1 on yt by mass streaming.

Melon is a better indicator of the popularity of a song among general public.

  • Melon still has its value because its ranking is UL-based (similar to filtered streams for Spotify) and it still publish hourly and 24H cumulative ULs

Those are some reliable metrics that hard to inflate as compared to streams.

  • Youtube music users skew younger, from teens to 30s, while melon skews older. Yes, youtube music is more susceptible to streamers but they do also combat it which is evident in the lower youtube views/plays these days. However, relying on melon when most young people don't use that service as much anymore cant really represent the general public. Music streams is still largely driven by young people and that shows the importance of youtube music still.

I agree never said melon has no value. It is still the second biggest streaming platform at least for now

if you watch the mv it also does count as 1 stream as well. Yt music also adds videos that used that audio and counts towards streams. So it is very very skewed I might say.

I agree for these points too.

YT Music chart is not that transparent as compared to Melon and spotify. Hence even on western side, you will see people place heavier weightage on Spotify, followed by AM and then only YT Music

True but youtube still has a larger audience of Korean people listening to the music so it can still show general interest especially among younger people which is the biggest audience for music. I do agree if you want to see what older people are listening to melon is most accurate. Also to my knowledge YT music does not add videos using the audio towards the stream at least not for their charts.

Yes yt music does add videos(most of the time performances). Supernova was charting at like 10 or 11 on YT music Korea daily. And then guys from military covered it and it had a lot of views and next day Supernova became N1 on YT music daily.

And after couple of days it again dropped to 10-11.

The best indicator is not one platform but all.

If the song is charting on similar positions across all platforms then it is actually popular. Not like some hybe artist songs on Spotify Korea, where it doesn’t chart anywhere else.

So Circle Digital Chart and PAKs are the best indicators.

Idk how magnetic is still charting, but for example drama was removed after it charted in top 10-20? for a year on yt.
