I feel like now, the first year of kpop groups has become so important that it might already reflect their entire careers in Korea

  • I feel like if a group doesn’t make a strong impression within their whole first year after debuted, the public will just move on from them, especially with so many new groups debuting. We’re in the social media era, where even smaller companies can grab attention, so the competition is fierce, but the audience isn’t growing. So kpop groups need to move fast too to win over fans because the market in Korea is so saturated. It feels like time is moving quicker now, and the first year of a group’s career really shows where they’re headed.

Before, people used to say things like, “This group is still new, they still have time to improve and impressed,” but with big companies pumping out groups like fast food, the public moves on quickly too. It’s harder to have consistent hits or well performed songs now unless people really trust the group. The prove is, now when a group has a hit song, it doesn’t carry over to their next comeback anymore, again unless the gp trusted the group where they can even release a shit and it will still do well. That's how tough and fast things move now. If you slip even a bit, people’s attention will shifts quickly.

So I think compared to before, it’s really important for groups to establish a good image and strong brand in their first year, while they still have all the attention on them, so newcomers won’t shake their position so easily. Because after that, the chance might already gone.

  • I completely agree. These days, having a hit song and gaining quick popularity right after debut is much more important compared to the past. While achieving popularity over time isn’t impossible for current groups, it’s definitely something that’s much harder to accomplish now.

  • I think it has a lot to do with how many groups are debuting, so they all have to try their best to catch public's attention as quickly as possible.

The pace of life in general has changed a lot in the last years. I noticed everything seems to go faster and some people get bored easily and move on to another thing right away. Short attention span of the audiences and oversaturation means new groups have to do something extra to stand out. It also shws with the way groups are promoting now and how heavily they rely on social media, specifically tiktok.

  • first impressions matter

if you are new and not completely nugu (or from a nugu company) then you only have a certain number of chances before the public "gives up on you"

for example if you come from the big4 then you are going to get more listeners and viewers and fans before anything else and certainly more than non-big4 groups (on average) however if your songs don't click then each cb makes it harder since the GP won't have that name familiarity anymore

and if you are from a smaller/nugu group then it's even harder since you don't have that name recognition for the public to even give you a shot
