What is your Anime 3x3?

  • I don't really watch anime anymore. I read manga these days, but most of the time I'm lazy and wait for ongoing manga to release a bunch of chapters and then I decide to catch up.

The only two anime on here are Code Geass, because I have no other choice, and Magi. I did end up reading the rest of the Magi series, but I definitely love the anime a lot.

Just as a warning, all of these series has intense themes/scenes and/or fanservice except for Yubisaki to Renren. Though Sakamoto Days isn't really bad with that, it's just the usual action violence stuff.

One Piece | Sakamoto Days | Chainsaw Man
Firefly Wedding | Monster | Yubisaki to Renren
Code Geass | Magi | Tomie

  • at what point does one piece get monotonous? I heard Skypiea was the last good arc and everything afterward is just fillers. Also do you know when the series transitioned from cel animation to digital?

PREPARE FOR A LONG RESPONSE - I APOLOGIZE! I'm just a huge fan of the series so I have lots to say.

One Piece actually has the least amount of filler content when compared to series like Bleach and Naruto. The issue with the One Piece anime is the pacing. Scenes are drawn out and stretched to be as long as possible, reaction scenes from characters (main or even random) takes forever, and so on. So instead of filler content, we just see people running for like 5 minutes or get several shots of random characters being shocked. So, so frustrating. That being said, there is also annoying/useless filler at times (the most memorable for me is 10 episodes of flashback filler content for each of the main characters right before the climax of an arc, lol). However, there is also some pretty fun filler, like the G9 filler arc that happens immediately after Skypiea.

Also, it's interesting you say that you've heard Skypiea was the last good arc. To me, it seems that many non-fans and fans alike are divided on Skypiea. Many say that Skypiea is filler and to skip it. But that's wrong! Skypeia is an important arc and I personally enjoyed it.

So basically I watched from the beginning of One Piece to the end of the Water 7 arc as people normally would. After that, the pacing became terrible (in my opinion, though some fans say the terrible pacing begins later) during the transition of the Water 7 arc to the next arc, Enies Lobby. It was then I started watching the episodes at 1.25x speed, then 1.5x speed. Thankfully I can read subtitles quickly.

Then I discovered the One Pace website, which saved me from dropping the series all together. One Pace is a group of people who take the series and fix the pacing to make it actually watchable (though it obviously can't save the crappy animation in a few arcs). For example, they took the Dressrosa Arc - which is the most notoriously poorly paced arc - and brought 118 episodes down to 48. Absolute insanity.

Using One Pace, I watched from the Thriller Bark arc up to the latest episodes of the Wano arc (which was the airing arc during the time I was watching). Once I caught up, I just began reading the manga weekly and never went back to the anime. It's been probably 2 or more years since then.

I will say that One Pace recently got criticized for fixing the pacing too much, as they had edited out some amazing fighting sequences because they weren't in the manga. While I will say that (in my opinion) One Pace is the best way for people to view the series, I will also admit that unfortunately with the recently aired arc, Egghead, they are cutting out things that actually amplify the scenes.

Skypeia is definitely not the last good arc and the rest definitely isn't filler. Anyone who says that either just absolutely hates the series or has never watched/read it, so don't trust them!

  • Interesting, this is very insightful.

Regarding Skypiea, the forum i was reading people said after skypiea was long ring long land, which was more of a filler arc and weren't really related to anything, so if you were to stop anywhere that would be the mark. I value quality over quantity so it's a shame seeing one piece getting dragged out to oblivion, bc I know deep there's a good story to be told. Kinda reminds me of persona 5 actually 😅 but that's a story for another day

Thankfully the anime is currently going into a 6-month hiatus, returning April 2025. Hopefully the manga will be far enough ahead by then so that viewers wouldn't have to worry about pacing. But who knows? Toei loves milking the series for everything it has got. It's definitely suffered from being constantly on air for the past, what, 25 years or so? It should've been seasonal!

Yeah, Long Ring Long Land is definitely filler content. It is canon, but useless to the overall story and probably can be skipped. Also, the anime did make it even longer than the arc was in the manga...

But after Long Ring Long Land is actually followed by the two most fan-favorite arcs in the series - Water 7 and Enies Lobby. So many fans report absolutely falling in love with the series during those arcs! Those two arcs are definitely my favorites too, plus a few others.
