  • Kpop is music genre. And my understanding, unless their music sound like kpop then they just ends up as pop music.

Kpop music itself has not received global. Global chart full of easy listen music, not kpop sound. Even BTS song that received globally like dynamite is not truly kpop. I like NJ, but let's face it, none of their songs are kpop music. The only think make kpop either you sound like kpop, or you come from Korea.

Kpop is a subgenre at best. I would argue there's nothing truly unique about it musically, but what even makes it "Kpop" in the first place is debatable. Is it the Korean language? Or the fact that there are Koreans involved? I think if this group actually debuts in Korea, singing in Korean, then there's a basis for calling it Kpop. But if they're simply a foreign group assembled by a Korean company, then no.

Do you consider boy with luv pop or kpop? :pepe-narrow-eyes:

  • doesn't matter, they're still gonna flop along with Vcha & Katseye - there has never been a "global" GG that popped off. Spice girls/little mix were British, TLC/Destiny's child were American and specifically black - which would not work nowadays since the hip hop rnb era are long dead, and all the kpop GGs we have are still Korean at the end of the day. When you try to cater to everyone you end up satisfying no one 🤷‍♀️

I would say some of the things that made kpop unique.

    1. Pop music based on American influences. (not unique, just the base)

    2. Add Rap lines in a pop song.

    3. Dance formations and choreography.

    4. Korean language with English words (other languages)

    5. Cute concepts.

I guess if you keep 1-3, and you change #4, can still be kpop?

The cute concept no longer applies.

  • Being so heavily influenced by American pop, by its very nature, prevents Kpop from being unique. This includes dance formations & intensive choreo, which American pop groups were known for, and rapping, which is an American lyrical delivery that pop groups have experimented with in the past. They were typically bad at it, but they were still doing it before Kpop (and something tells me most Kpop rappers wouldn't actually be considered good at it either.) "Cute concepts" are something that needs to be defined culturally. I would argue that American pop acts were definitely doing "cute concepts" by their culture's standards, even if they weren't pretending to be innocent little angels or doing full-on aegyo like a Kpop group.

So basically the only thing setting Kpop apart is the Korean language. Maybe the fact that the people in charge behind-the-scenes are Korean. There was a time where you could say its performers were Korean or they were based in Korea, but these have both become increasingly less true over time, as more & more foreign idols have debuted and Kpop acts have increased their own presence overseas. But I think you still need to debut in Korea and be active there, if nothing else.

  • I guess their debut is in English/Korean and English/Spanish.

  • This is an impressive plan.

But why would a Chinese company want to create kpop groups.
