  • First impression Munster has massive sidewalks. Really transforms the City.

In my personal opinion, Münster is one of the prettiest cities in Germany, sure there are other pretty places like Munich or Dressden, but the unique style of Münster and that I grew up near it made it very special for me.

It's also known as the city with the most bycicles in Germany. There are about 83 million citizen in Germany, and there are about 80 million bycicles in the country, but nobody can top Münster. The city has 320K citizen and about 1 million bycicles. A common joke about the amount of bycicles is, that there are so many because every citizen forgot where they parked their first one, their second one was robbed and they own a 3rd one to have a usable bycicle. It's crazy if you walk the streets, how there are so many bycicles everywhere. It gets worse if you are close to the main train station

I'm not kidding with these pictures, they are real images of the city:

The sad reality is, because of all the bycicles in the city, but also the region around it, there is extrem bycicle theft. Many smaller villages and towns around Münster complain about over 100 stolen bycicles per month and Münster itself gets over 1K cases per month itself where people report their bycicles beeing missing. However this is not the city with the most theft tho. The biggest bycicle theft happens in Leipzig with around 1.5K stolen bycicles per 100K citizen.

But outside of this, Münster still has a lot other things that make it pretty, here are some images:

This is the old harbour, it conects to a artificial river called Dortmund-Ems-Kanal (Dortmund-Ems canal), that flows into the river Ems. The Canal is used by a lot ships, but also during the summer by a lot people who want to swim inside of it. I used to swim in the canal too when I was young, but it was scary since there might come big ships that pass you and my grandma scared me with a story of how my aunt when she was young tried to swim as close as possible to the ships with her friends, which is quit dangerous. The harbour btw is nowadays mainly a hotspots for bars, clubs, cafes and houses a lot students from the local university. Münster is known as one of the university cities in Germany, so when the amount of students grew to over 62K per year, they needed more space and cause most factories in the harbour closed down, they decided to repurpose the buildings to make apartments from it aswell as some start ups use these as their offices now.

And this castle here is the local university, it also has a small botanical garden that is mainly known for one house that has gigantic orange trees inside. The botanical garden was originaly run as a project by some students around the 80s and is now open to everyone to see it for free.

Than there is the most famous church of the city, which isn't even the dome they have. It's the St. Lamberti

As you may see there are 3 cages hanging on tower. There is a pretty dark story to it, which makes it so famous. During middle age, these cages had been used, as in many other cities in Europe, to showcase criminals, mainly when they had been already dead. According to the history of Münster, the cages show a event that happend around 1535 where after about 16 years of occupation, 5 men of a group called Täufer had been arested. 2 got free and the other 3 of them had to be puniched for what they did. When the bishop of the city told them how much money it would cost to take the city back, one of them jokingly said they should build these cages and take money from visitors to go inside and see them. It's unclear if this is the reason why the cages exist. Another story known tells that the 3 guys had to be punished for what they did and so they build these cages and told them to torture the men by rippinf of their flesh and burning them alive. on the day of the execution thousands of people came to witness the event that apparently lasted several hours. Later when the 3 men had been dead, they put their corpses into these cages. The cages are apparently still there to remind people to not be as stupid as these men and to not do crimes. Apparently the remains of the dead had been still visible for 30 years after they had been executed.

I know this story since I was little and it felt so weird, because during christmas there is always a christmas market and they put lights up in these cages.

And this is the city's largest lake, the Aasee. The most famous part of it are 3 sculptures of gigantic white balls made from concrete. The city tries to keep them good looking but since putting them there in the 80s it's a torture for the city to keep them clean, cause people always spray onto them. In the 2010s they than begun to punish people with paying a penalty if they get cought spraying onto the balls and since then it got slowly down with the people who sprayed over them.

  • Truly blown away by Munster images. What a place to grow up. Bike riding as a kid, just like the adults. Must be extra healthy place to live. I'd be in constant awe by Munster and residents.

Whoa there was some serious Law enforcement back in the Old days. Looks very law abiding place today. Besides some bike theft. Its like washing a face clean and seeing how nice a City can be.

Like location next to huge Lake. Oh wow even more fun as a Kid. Like I said I'd be in constant awe of Munster.
