If you thing about the timetable, in 2017 he toured with BTS until june, joined JYP in july, was introduced as a Stray Kids member in august, the reality show ended in december. And he debuted 3 months later. 
No pre-training at all, just pure experience ...

Well, It was expected, since he didn't have any training and much less experience as a vocalist to back him up, he was experient as a dancer and received praise for such, leading the other members during the show's practices.
Nowdays, I agree he improved significantly! It helps he pays a personal vocal coach alongside Seungmin and I.N.

Yes there's definitively a big noticeable improvement in his vocals, he didn't seem that strong when they debuted, which is understandable. And now you can tell he's been going to a vocal coach. I started to pay extra attention to his vocals after Taste, he sounded amazing there. He sounds great on Cover Me.
