How does he manage to sound even better live than in the studio version?
Through sheer talent

He sounds decent but I'm not ascending to the heavens or anything maybe I'm deaf

He actually looks like he likes to perform unlike most K-pop idols.

My takeaway:
When an idol lip synchs during a "supposedly" live performance, the kpop idol wants to play safe. Or the Label doees not want to take a chance on making an undoubtedly big mess.
When the backtrack music is much louder than the idol's vocal, it means label wants to keep the illusion that the idol can sing well.
When the idol sings live and the voice momentarily cracks, while having the rest of the song performed well, then it's not the end of it all. Cracking of the voice, contrary to what some people believe, is NOT a RARE occurrence. This is what live show is all about.
When the idol sings as good as the CD, that's a remarkable thing.
When the idol sings better LIVE than what you hear on the CD . . . that is fucking amazing!
And Jungkook . . . . . . is fucking amazing!

When he sang ”control”, I went to the moon. That part is even nicer than the high notes in the 2nd verse
