BTS is a profit venture for Korea as much as it a kpop group

  • This is how the Korean government and the movers & shakers of that country see BTS.

Which is good for fans. Now powerful people are protecting BTS because they want the billions of won to keep flowing into the Korean treasury

And also not good news for SM

  • What BTS is doing for their economy is not something that can truly be comprehended.

  • If Korea were smart, they would do everything in their power to cultivate and grow Kpop.

Look what the US did to the rest of the world over the past 60 years. Absolute cultural dominance on a global scale, unmatched in human history. American music, movies, television, dance, food, sports, etc have brought in untold trillions over the years. Central to this of course is the English language (and more generally, the USD's status as the world's reserve currency but that's another matter lol).

Korea will never be able to replicate US hegemony. But just maintaining Kpop's status as the 7th largest music genre in the world when BTS disbands IS doable and should be the primary cultural goal of the country.

We may be seeing BH recognizing that their viability as a company depends on replacing BTS' revenue stream. All their recent acquisitions, and especially their agreement to join with arch rivals YGE with two separate business ventures, signal to me that they understand that a rising tide lifts all boats. Kpop companies that engage in dirty tactics to try to bring down rival labels has to be a thing of the past. They have to act more like organized crime lords.
