Was it right for YG to allow iKon to win a Grand Prize over BlackPink back in 2018?

  • Did iKon do something wrong by winning the Grand Prize in 2018 over BP? 9

    1. Yes (2) 22%
    2. No (7) 78%

In retrospect, YG's tendency to hold his top acts down so it does not grow too big is biting back now.

Let's not be delusional. BP won't continue like this anymore. It might do one or two more tours but that would be about it and if they ever really reunite it will be at least a decade away.

BP will end without a Grand Prize, thanks to -Ikon.

Granted, Ikon's Love Scenario was a big hit.

However, there is something to learn from how SM did things.

SM did NOT allow its junior groups to win Grand Prizes. Sinhwa only won after HOT had disbanded, and Shinee only won at Melon, which was NOT considered to be a real grand prize at that time because it does not count foreign activities. F(x) never won a Grand Prize.

Ikon was like a second thought to YG. Winner was what YG had pushed , and Ikon could be comparable to NMixx now.

In 2018, the only year BP had a shot at the Grand Prize, Ddu-du-du-du was #1 in the Gallup polls, while Love Scenario was #1 in the Melon Annual Chart. It was YG's choice, and he chose Ikon, probably to keep BP under his thumb.

Love Scenario became iKon's only hit, it didn't go anywhere after that, and then B.I. got into drug trouble and was out of YG, and we have not heard too much about iKon since then.

Like YG refusing to cancel Psy's assignments with idiot universities in 2012 , costing him the #1 in Billboard Hot 100 because he had to go to the shit colleges whose contract YG should have cancelled but did not (and now he is back to the shit colleges, btw),

YG stabbed BP on the back in 2018 by not withdrawing iKon's bid for Grand Prize. Again, it is like JYP allowing NMixx to win a Grand Prize while SKZ has not won one. Wouldn't Christopher be pissed if that happens?

Managing a company is difficult. But in retrospect SM's philosophy of having a 'leading' group which wins grand prizes and the 'supporting' groups appears to have been correct. YG's bizarre philosophy of supporting an act at his whim appears to have backfired this time.

Did you watch the survival show? Iirc watching the show YG wanted Team B to win the survival show aka IKON… He favored them a lot. It’s just that fans who were into the show preferred WINNER so they won in the end. And the fact that they made another survival show solely for IKON…

That is just YG being YG. He never shows favoritism other than Big Bang, always trying to play his acts against one another.

Nah, obv out of all groups I agree Big Bang is his favorite. But he was also really fond of IKON at that time. He made a survival show just for them. He could have just let those trainees in Team B go but he didn’t. He probably thought BI was going to be a GD 2.0 in terms of popularity.
