What is your opinion on artists selling the publishing rights for their old music catalogue?

It's completely up to the artist to determine what's best for themselves but I find it kind of surprising tbh. It seems the only benefit is a huge payment upfront and I wouldn't have thought JB needed the cash. It is a lot of money tho.

It's his choice and I'm sure he has a ton of top lawyers to advise him with these things.

On that note, I hope in BTS' renewal they negotiate a % of their master recordings to HYBE. Hopefully, they thought about it. It would also set a precedence in the SK music industry, as I haven't heard any artists owning their music rights unless they own the company lol

You already made money from your old music. What’s the big deal in selling the right to it and making more money. Seems like the smart thing to do.

Up to the artist to decide, especially older acts. The money can help them retire and check out of the industry.

I didn’t expect JB to sell his being so young still but I dunno his real life situation. It is his choice. Maybe he wants to take a break and can use that money for it etc.

For some artist, who are self aware, they know their popularity won’t be at the same level and they may make a good deal to get the lump sum now vs future (unknown situation where revenue can reduce; also as we know many artist don’t make that much - their companies do etc.). Not all musician are legendary acts that will have long lasting popularity to have stable income from IP/royalties etc.

Alot of them debut very young and their early discographies are controlled by their labels. They might not be as attached to it as we think.

Being a 2nd generation fan, there are lots of idols from that era who have no attachment to their early years or even worse they only have bad memories of it. It's important to remember our perception as fans might be very different to what actually happened.

Some 4minute members even sold their stage outfits in an auction.

As long as they don't sell it to Scooter Braun or Kakao it's fine
