Pride among other things is a big thing. I know most international fans have zero interest in Korean culture let alone Asian societies as a whole. But it's nothing like western countries.

Many people here do take pride in their work. Hell it was and is still a prestige to work for Samsung and other companies as big as them the whole entrance exams people cram for is for this reason. It was and is still seen as shameful if you aren't working there just like our old stereotype of you must be doctor and have solid A+ in every class and goto top universities. The same is true in the job market. So employees and others working in the industry having serious reservations about what's happening is common.
