Isn't OMG/Ditto debut material?

  • Guys, why do i have the feeling that Ditto and OMG were propably the debut material for NJ?

They both truly feel like debut songs. They introduce the group and the lore. Installing the story of the group.

Attention also feels like a debut song tho. But Hype feels more like the 1st comback song. Smh if you get me. Like a summer anthem or something.

I still think that Attention was a perfect debut song.

Somehow i think it could have make sense for NJ to debut with Attention/Cookie in march and have their first comback with Hype boy / Hurt in summer. Then have the fall/winter Ditto/OMG comback.

Ditto/OMG feels almost like Black mamba and Fearless in this sense. They put in place the group's storytelling, lore and also the overal musical direction.

I personally think their next comback must be something catchy like Hype boy tho. So they can establish their ability to put out viral and catchy mega hits.

Honestly, Hype boy is SOTY material. They could probably even have an american debut with it in english version.

    What do you think?

Changed the title of the thread from “OMG/Ditto debut theory” to “Isn't OMG/Ditto debut material?”.
  • Big No
    it will flop like NMIXX

luckily for them the momentum hype and fandom + gen public reputation already on their side

    it comparable to IZTY debut
but had better individual marketing or each of their members had stronger following than ITZY
and fresher/younger lineup is an advantage

  • i think people are really overlooking the seasonal aspect when it comes to talking about ditto and omg. these songs were specifically picked for their winter vibe. that is why they are heavily focused on the melody and are more mid tempo. it was said that omg was produced alongside newjean's debut tracks. but i see that more as continuity rather than omg sounding like a debut song. i think ditto and omg were very good follow ups personally and they are solidifying what new jeans is all about. i would say hype boy was actually a very good introductory song and concept.

personally im not sure about "lore" when it comes to newjeans. mee heejin is basically treating their mvs and concepts like an art or fashion exhibit. its a display of multiple different ideas that i have yet to see as entirely cohesive to the point where there will be a long running storyline. but only time will tell i guess.

ok i get it. But i'm not talking in term of success but in term of introduction. I feel like these two songs are meant to be an introduction.

but maybe hype directors were like we need something more catchy for a debut and then MHJ worked to get attention/hype boy. If you get what i mean.

Im not saying it's the better choice but that maybe it was the first choice. And it terms of sotrytellings it makes sense.

uh im not talking in terms of "success" either. my whole point was that i think ditto/omg are good follow ups and that hype boy was a good introduction song. truth is, hype boy's flashiness, catchiness, funkiness, ect is what kept new jeans at the top. attention got them attention but hype boy kept all eyes on them. and ditto and omg are just driving everything home.

min heejin said before their debut that she had newjeans' debut song for like 3 years... not sure if it was confirmed if she meant hype boy, cookie, or attention specifically, but their debut was already planned for a long time. there was no last minute switch to something more "catchy".

Yeah ok and i feel like this debut song from 3 years was Ditto :/

  • Not really imo they’re doing well because attention and hype boy were a hit and attracted attention so people tuned in. Imo these would have been forgotten if they were the debuts.

Well im not talking in terms of sucess but in terms of introduction. I feel like these two songs and these two mvs are like the perfect introduction to NJ lore and storytelling and general music direction. You know, a debut meant dor introduction not necess1rily to be a hit.

Their 1st comback on the other hand is supposzd to ve a hit or smth. You know :/ Like Black Mamba vs Next Level but Ditto vs Hype boy.

  • fun fact: OMG and Ditto were chosen if not already recorded during the same sessions as the debut EP. (the final versions of OMG/Ditto may have new vocals as the members improved their skills tho). Hurt was chosen as early as 2019.

But it sounds like they were sitting on these 6 songs at the same time and decided to keep 4 for debut and 2 for later, and the basis for choosing that was the summer and winter concepts.

aclassyteaparty is right (as usual) in that people should see these comebacks like fashion shows, with FW and SS themes. Loosely connected, but new inspirations mixed in also.

  • I don't think MHJ has a LORE for them to follow along. They are just experiencing things as NJs are growing, if they only gambled on SOTY-worthy songs they wouldn't have invested so much on EVERY song (with their fanbase & hype, just focus on 1 catchy title track, I bet the streaming & charting would be much greater => SOTY)

Also the debut time might be decided not only by ADOR, but HYBE too, not to clash with their other artists. So the songs chosen make sense. I can't imagine hearing Ditto in summer.

I still disagree. I think setting the tone of their musical direction and concept was already very well done with their debut album. Everything I.e both the success and the music is only an extension of their debut.
