The Power of Aesthetics and Collaborations in K-Pop: How Do They Affect the Success of a Group?

  • Hi, I'm a newbie studying many concepts involving k-pop as part of a personal study.

K-Pop is known for its flashy and attention-grabbing aesthetics, from the elaborate stage outfits to the highly choreographed music videos. But how does the visual aspect of K-Pop impact the success of a group? Do certain aesthetics help some groups stand out more than others?

Additionally, collaborations and cross-promotions between K-Pop artists and artists from other genres have become more common in recent years. How do these collaborations and cross-promotions benefit the K-Pop industry and the artists involved? Do they help groups gain more recognition and expand their fan base, or do they have any drawbacks?

What are your thoughts on the role of aesthetics and collaborations in K-Pop? Share your opinions and examples in the comments below!

  • First of all, welcome to AKP. If you ever need any help around here, let me know and I’ll be happy to help. Also, would you like to get your first badge for free? I think there’s a pretty Chaewon one you could get if you want to.

As for your question, I do believe these affect a group, but I don’t think it’s necessarily the biggest factor (being from the Big 4 or going viral for your looks might play into your success just as much or more). That being said, does anyone else remember when everyone and their grandma was doing girl crush not super long ago? Well, since everyone was doing it, the groups that didn’t do it stuck out more than the ones who did since they were doing something different than what most people were. When you do something different, people tend to remember you and your group more, and this includes styling and concepts too.

  • First of all, I am Chaewon's bf! Second of all, I believe aesthetic help a groups success. If a group's aesthetic is unappealing, who would want to check them out. Kpop leans very heavily on lookism, especially with roles like visuals in groups. I can't really think of an example of collaborations helping a group's success, at least nothing comes to my mind immediately so I can't answer that one
