Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka or "How Do You Live?" is going to be Miyazaki's final film, actually he retired in the mid 2010s but his passion is making movies so it ended being a hiatus more than anything, one of the reasons (if not the main one) is that Miyazaki is aware of his mortality and he wanted to left a gift for his grandson

    according to Toshio Suzuki

“Miyazaki is making the new film for his grandson. It’s his way of saying ‘Grandpa is moving on to the next world, but he’s leaving behind this film.'”
  • Great, his last movie, for the 6th time.

this time i do think it's for real

In a late 2019 interview with NHK, Miyazaki stated that the film is not to be expected anytime soon; he said that in his younger age, he used to produce 10 minutes of animation every month, but now his speed was reduced to 1 minute per month

he started production back in 2016 but the movie isn't going to be finished until next year, that's 7 years

he is 81 years old and is probably going to get slower the older he gets so even if he were to live another 10 years it wouldn't be enough for another film

  • Hopefully he's not as much of a dick to his grandson as he is to his son.

despite working in the same place Miyazaki and Goro didn't talked to each other for years, not to defend Miyazaki but i sort of understand why he was mad at his son

Miyazaki and his wife were career animators, they wanted Goro to follow the same steps but he refused and pursued another career, at this point they still got along but later around the 2000s Goro was hired as a director in Ghibli despite having not experience

Miyazaki was furious about how the other big ups of Ghibli passed other talented animators and gave the position to his son simply because they were related, again, Goro didn't have any real experience outside working in the Ghibli museum

although Miyazaki was still kind of an ass

lately (and thanks to his grandson) they are now getting along "okay", Miyazaki even gave Goro his support during "Earwig and the Witch"

  • I also agree that it was annoying when I read it was his last film for the past years but I also can understand that when you live something that is your work, you just end up doing it because it is such a big part of his life. I didn’t know of the family issues.

Having said that, I also too believe it will be his official last film - he’s really getting old now.

I watch every Studio Ghibli film and the recent ones have not held up. To be blunt - the ones by Goro were the weakest but then I also didn’t care for The Wind Rises either. I re-watched it recently to see if I would like it more and nope. I also watched Earwig wanting to like it but I didn’t at all. I won’t ever watch it again too. The only work by Goro that I liked was Poppy Hill but I always get annoyed by the bit where they thought they could have been siblings. Lol

I think the last one that really left an impact was Kaguya Hime. I will look forward to the new film next year, maybe I will be in Japan for its release.
