  • I appreciate the look into NewJeans' concept as almost everything I know about them is from other people saying it (not my own experience) (y2k y2k y2k, "min heejin is a pedophile", cookie inappropriate, minji is so beautiful, hyein is vietnamese, gives you nostalgia for the early days).

I can appreciate now that while 2000's aesthetics have been done before even in K-pop, it was NewJeans that did this in a way that was especially:

    A. detailed (the creative team put thought into multiple aspects, they incorporated hair, outfits, and makeup, and like MHJ said, "a good concept isn't just defined by one factor and it's something that makes you feel very complex feelings and attracts you and that is what truly makes a great concept" )(direct quote from this video)

    B. Accessible or noticeable to people (although all artists are creative, Hybe and SM groups (+ Billlie) are the ones that are perceived as especially artistic because they are especially elaborate or original with their ideas. (e.g. BTS/TXT artistry which I still don't get but seems very complicated, SM Cultural Universe, Nct/Aespa/Red Velvet, Exo universe, Le Sserafim is coming up on this imo since their documentary gave insight into how they incorporated the members' life stories into their lyrics and brand)

All artists are creative, YG and JYP are also creative (have a lot of self producing groups too), but Hybe and SM do it in a more high art way and are seen as "true artistes"

(Extremely pretentious and above common creativity, pioneering new ideas)

However some of the uploaders other points are very common/parroting of popular opinions that I still disagree with

    1. It wasn't the lyricists intention for Cookie to be about sex. I agree it is a societal problem that it came off as weird/sexual to a large amount of people, both on instinctive first impression and detailed studying But it was not their original intention. Much like it was a societal problem that Epex's lyrics sounded like they're about the Nazis, without that being the lyricists original intention.

What I take issue with is not people being uncomfortable with the lyrics, but the uploader/video dismissed Ador's 25 paragraph denial statement as lying. I think people are in their right to be disgusted/disturbed by the lyrics but to say that they actually intended to make it about sex is conflating a common interpretation with original intentions. I didn't read that super long statement carefully when it just came out (since I didn't even listen to the song) but I just read it right now and I don't understand how people dont believe this.

    2. "Most (popular) girl groups have noisy EDM/girl crush debuts", I thought this was a complaint in 2019, and at that time it was not true and it still isn't true. NJ sound is different, but all GG sounds are different. NJ sound does seem "refreshing" "lighter" "nostalgic" and all (like CSR) but other GGs music are not all loud, hard, and cliché in comparison.
