Starship are having the best songwriters right now, better than Big 3/4

  • People are always saying it's hard to come up with great songs consistently if you're not Teddy, but Starship is proving anyone wrong: IVE songs are all really, really good and better than what YG, SM and JYP (and HYBE?) spurn out for their groups.

On that base, even Soyeon is doing a killer job for Idle (and Soojin should sue her former childhood friend accusers for not being able to be part of Idle's recent successes imo).

Looks like smaller companies are doing consistently better when it comes to good song production than the Big 4.

    Approved the thread.
  • aren't all of Ive's songs bought demos

like they have a good ear for picking catchy bangers but those aren't in house writers they employ.

Personally I think Hybe has a great ear too, New Jeans and Le Sserafim music has smashed this year, while being sonically different enough to distinguish them right away.

  • They’re using the same songwriters ^^

Ryan Jhun is one of the writers of two of the three Ive hits and he’s worked with many groups and companies in Kpop, from SM to JYP.

  • they literally always had, people only are noticing now because ive is doing well but one quick look at their artists music and you can tell they never played when it comes to quality

  • but the key difference isnt the producers, but which songs they are picking to promote and if they are willing to listen to their performers opinion.

for example, starship wasnt sure about love dive, but wonyoung loved it so much that they listened to her and the rest is history. there's a lot of stories about starship artists having a say in their music.

  • the b-sides are pretty average though

Isn’t he that guy who said and wrote misogynistic lyrics? Great look for kpop. Rewarding a misogynist with more work with girl groups. This is why I can’t take GG seriously.

If you are talking about Step Back the lyrics are clearly 100% by someone else on the credits. But there was some misunderstanding that it was written by Ryan Jhun cause of some things he said previously. (it was only produced by him)

It's true though they don't leave much of an impression when you first hear them, (probably the reason starship wasn't sure about them as titles), and it was a big surprise for everyone that they became big hits (Like no one LOVED Eleven and Love Dive at the first listen)

I believe they became successful because they went with more unique songs that had a risk of you not liking it from the first listen, rather than songs that have a more generic and easy to see appeal.

(And this "risk" worked because they already had debut hype/Eleven was already huge,

Other groups that delivered unusual but musically interesting debuts the same year were Billlie and Purple Kiss, but their debuts are much less radio friendly or replayable than Ive's, and overall they had less exposure though they had some debut hype)

yes, rather than having an in-house song writer starship are utilizing their artist's ear to choose which song that they gonna promote. MonstaX and WJSN are always having a say in their song
