Why does Exo have absolutely zero digital Gaon certifications?

  • Moderator

    Approved the thread.
  • because they were mostly fandom driven

  • Gaon isn't issuing them retroactively, so none of their old songs will get any.

  • fandom mass streaming

  • It just shows that they weren’t as big with the gp as the fans want people to think. Their biggest hit song growl couldn’t even hit 2.5m downloads despite it being released in the download era.

  • Because they were never had strong digitals.

They strength was in album sales, 4th gen are similar to them with high album sales low digitals

  • because they were the strongest digitally between 2013-2016. Gaon certificates began in 2018

  • Wasn't it revealed most of their songs have massive streaming from zombies and or bots? Ko Ko Bop was found to be something like the most streamed song of the last decade in Korea which obviously can't be correct as there was lots much bigger songs in charts so therefore it meant it it was mass streaming.

  • Huge fandom. Everyone talks about TVXQ but i think Exo had the biggest fandom in all of Kpop before BTS took over.

  • exo were known for fans mass streaming you can use the same argument for bts but at least they are known by the general public something exo never achieved. exo's achievement was mostly album sales not something to brag about nowadays

  • We know many of them crossed 1 million prior to when the charts stopped showing them. Like an insane amount of downloads. Across all their songs. The categories are not “digitally irrelevant” and “Gaon certification” as binary.

They don’t have songs that crossed 2mil downloads(or is it 2.5mil) but they have more songs than almost everyone with over 1million downloads(I’m too lazy to pull up the stats from 2016 but trust me on this or you can ask in the digitals thread). I personally love EXO’s dominance where their discography is actually loved.

They have good music so people actually listen to their album. I know that’s really hard to stomach when no one cares about your favs music. Maybe people should try to promote their fav instead of focusing on EXO’s excellent digitals!

It was a transient era. Growl was actually #2 on the Gaon streaming chart. (Never done by BG ever since then BTW for those who love to downplay achievements) It was caught in between a download and streams era. Prior to 2014 I wouldn’t really compare any digitals because it’s hard to do. But I know this thread was just made to drag not because people here actually know what they’re talking about.

But what's to say their music is "loved" when it is likely simply be their fans mass streaming/downloading their album songs? I mean it's not like their title tracks since growl have been huge chart organic hits so why would their albums songs be.

You realise the fact that it's a transient era makes it easier for them to chart high on Gaon streaming right as it needs a lot less streams? So saying never done since when streaming is actually much more common and representative of music consumption now isn't some gothcha point. Its level of streams would have placed it 37th in the 2014 year-end streaming chart.

They were 56th on the digital chart that year and 24th on the download chart. Yet streaming they were 2nd, quite clear what the anomaly is.

This is just kpop fans flawed logic of discounting people who are listening to full albums. Other BGs with bulk buying are not able to do what EXO did. You just want to discredit EXO’s excellent digitals because literally no one listens to your favs albums in Korea.

If EXO was that musically beloved, they wouldn't have fallen off as hard.

Actually artists popular for their music (IU, Davichi, Big Bang, BTS) have longevity.

No it’s kpop fans not shoving fingers in their ears and saying lalalala I can’t hear you. It’s basic logic.

It’s pretty much been proven that Exo had massive zombie streaming to the point they were one of the reasons why melon introduced rules to cut down on it affecting the charts. Exo would literally rise to teh near the top of charts at night and by day they were much lower down. If those digital albums were legit listeners then their b sides should’ve been up there in the charts in the charts competing with other groups title tracks but obviously that didn’t happen. The b sides charted high for first few hours then fell like a rock as normal for most kpop groups yet magically they supposedly have more downloads and streams? What gives, That makes zero sense.

It was transient because of the nature of how music was consumed that year. It’s not just EXO or Growl none of the songs from that year’s top 10 on the year end chart have been certified for downloads OR streams per Gaon’s observation notes. You can look it up.

IF growl had actually been released in 2014 it’s stream driven success could have actually been reflected on the charts. That was the actual point. Look there are so many metrics out to support growl I’m not interested in arguing it out with someone with limited knowledge on nuances of charts. It’s a waste of my time.

Even if they do completely fall off never to be seen again that won’t change the fact that their past albums were loved. I know that really hurts your feelings but facts can’t be changed. EXO just do have more songs that are loved than your favs ever will.

No one is talking about zombies streams. We are talking about ULs (UNIQUE LISTENERS) and downloads. They had fans who zombie streamed AND unique listeners. I know this is a hard concept to grasp because your favs probably have neither.

I know you thought you did something hunt try not to look stupid next time!!

You're missing the point for someone supposedly with all the knowledge.

I have no issue with you claiming Growl is big, but pointing out that no bg has been top 2 on the streaming chart since doesn't make it more impressive when streams were incredibly low and not heavily used in 2013 hence why they were not high on the other year-end charts.

On top of that it's also a flat-out lie, Big Bang and Ikon went one better and topped it in 2015 and 2018. Limited knowledge indeed.

I was only claiming Growl is big. If you didn’t have an issue with that not sure why you addressed me. And again you chose not to address the point I was actually making. I remembered Love Scenario after I posted and couldn’t edit lol. (Bigbang debuted after them and hence I wasn’t counting them) But even with those two let’s amend it to “most groups” instead.

We are looking at it two different ways lol. You saying their streams in 2013 would have earned them some top 40 spot in 2014. I’m saying if Growl was instead #2 in 2014 their stream numbers would have been huge. Do you see how we are arguing separate things?

  • It's entertaining how people are bringing up zombie streaming as if there isn't hard evidence all over the internet that every band has zombie streamers, with some of the biggest bands having the most zombie streamers.

But nope, people use it against EXO as if they're the only fandom with it. Typical kpoppies.

  • Interesting that they keep bringing up having good ULs but never got certification. That is more of a red flag.

typical response. keep denying, it's okie :pepe-shame:

  • no one uses this just against EXO

exols themselves used this against BTS before Melon show the numbers

and everyone saw how Ko Ko Bop is the biggest fraud of all time

Because you were overexaggerating for the umpteenth time

I'm referencing the other charts because the same changes that you mention is the main reason Growl is 2nd on the streaming chart.

The price changes came into effect on the 1st Jan 2013 but users that were already on the apps (which you'd assume were most) had a grace period until 1/7/2013 - https://koreajoongangdaily.joi…/article.aspx?aid=2974293

EXO released Growl a month after that. Apink who topped the streaming chart that year put out NoNoNo 5 days after that on July 5th. Hit songs after July have inflated streams versus hit songs before it therefore an inflated position.

"Transient era".. Are we talking about just Growl here as if they don't have songs after that? They do but still no streaming certifications.

Perhaps, EXO only had this song that did well? Growl.

This the constant reiteration of Growl.

  • Interesting that they keep bringing up having good ULs but never got certification. That is more of a red flag.

Because certification is if you cross some huge number like 2.5mil etc. why do you think no certification = zero digitals. Who told y’all that :angryr: :cryingr:

  • "Transient era".. Are we talking about just Growl here as if they don't have songs after that? They do but still no streaming certifications.

Because people were downplaying growl as a national hit lol. It doesn’t bother me that they don’t have certificates. Certificates mean you have crossed a particular number. It’s good to have but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they have a large number of songs that have done well in comparison to other groups.

EXO’s downloads or unique listeners is not replicated by any GG or 99% of BG including groups like seventeen or NCT or other groups that also have huge fandoms.

What EXO did was unique which people here will ignore because it doesn’t fit their agenda. EXO had fans and zombie streams but they also had causals and GP. That’s why they’re different than most of the GGs and BGs.

  • That’s just saying prices went up? How are you correlating that with inflation Did you think you can say anything people would just believe you because you posted some news source or did you think I won’t open and read it :cryingr: :angryr:

How dim can one get? What do you think led to the sharpness of the switch from downloads to streaming in 2013? Do you think people just thought we'll stop downloading and start streaming for the fun of it?

The song toping the download chart in 2012 had 3.8m downloads, in 2013 it had 1.9m, nearly a 50% drop.

What was the biggest change to the South Korean music market in 2013? The price changes.

A 2013 year-end chart is comparing songs in that entire year, but songs released closest to the 1st July i.e. NoNoNo and Growl would benefit the most from the change in pricing as it was the biggest factor in people switching to streaming. Whilst songs released earlier in the year will have inflated downloads versus songs later in the year.

Did you even think to wonder why there is such a big discrepancy between the different charts in 2013?

what? Outside growl they did not have casual or public. If they did then the rest of their songs should've been big hits that landed high up in the end of year charts. Instead it became clear that their songs which did do relatively well were found out to be manipulated - KKB being the most glaringly obvious example.
